  2. Purpose of the Presentation • To provide an overview of the accomplishments of the Teacher Training Project being developed by ANSTSE and an expert working group.

  4. Background Teacher Training Project • Strategy #4 of the Strategic Plan, developed by ANSTSE, identifies the need to Promote the Establishment of State-Level Teacher Training Standards.

  5. Background Teacher Training Project • Improved teacher training is constantly a primary recommendations in each NHTSA-supported state assessments. • Over 50% of current teachers nationwide are at retirement age. • Many colleges and universities have discontinued their teacher training programs.

  6. Purpose of Teacher Training Project • Will create an alternative to university based driver education teacher training. This will assist all states and programs to offer quality driver education. • Commercial, public and private schools will all have a resource for training driver education teachers.

  7. Objective of the Project • To develop a system for the training of driver education teachers nationwide, including the development of model teacher training materials and recommendations for the certification of driver education teachers.

  8. Working Group • Currently being developed by a subject matter working group under the direction of ANSTSE with funding from NHTSA. Working group consists of: • Robin Bordner, Michigan Traffic Safety • Sharon Fife, DSAA and D&D Driving School, Ohio • Frank Gruber, Northern Illinois University • Richard Hanson, DTS Consulting, Oregon • Denis MacNeil, DCA, Ontario • Dale Ritzel, Southern Illinois University • John Svensson, DSAA and Road Safety Educator’s Association, Ontario • Supported by HSS staff

Tasks of the National Teacher Training System • Determine status of current state-level teacher training programs • Compare existing teacher training certification programs to the National Standards and the ADTSEA credentialing system • Develop a recommended teacher training and credentialing program with training courses and materials • Distribute the final materials for state use • Completion date of September 2015

Accomplishments • Materials Developed: • Stages for Teacher Training • Prerequisites, Competencies and Attributes of a Driver Education Instructor • Teacher Training Standards • Model Teaching Task training materials (lesson plans, slides, quizzes) • Conducted pilot test of the teaching task.

Stages for DE Teacher / Instructor Training Pre-Screening and Entry Assessments The Driving Task (formalized foundations class) Critical Content of the Curriculum Course (optional but highly recommended) The Teaching Task / Teaching and Learning Theories (formalized foundations class) Practice Teaching (Peer Teaching)

  12. Stages for DE Teacher / Instructor Training Student Teaching Practicum (optional but highly recommended) Exit Assessment for successful completion of the instructor preparation program

  14. Prerequisites, Attributes and Competencies of a Driver Education Instructor • Prerequisites to qualify as an instructor candidate. • Attributes the instructor candidate should possess. • Competencies the instructor candidate must achieve.

  15. Teacher Training Standards • To be incorporated into the current National Standards Section 3.0 Instructor Qualifications. • Designed to follow the Stages for DE Teacher / Instructor Training and the Pre-requisites, Competencies and Attributes.

  16. The Pilot Test • Conducted in Charlotte, North Carolina at Jordan Driving School • June 16 – 26, 2015 • Conducted the teaching task portion of the teacher training in 80 hours. • 12 teacher candidates

The Pilot Test • 2 teachers for each part: • Part 1: Robin Bordner and Dave Muma • Part 2: Robin Bordner and Rich Hanson • Part 3: Robin Bordner and Denis MacNeil • Evaluator for the entire training: Allen Robinson and Flo Sessoms as well as Jordan Driving School and NC Staff and Teachers. • Special thanks to Jordan Driving School!

The Teaching Task • Part 1 – Fundamental Concepts of Teaching and Learning • Part 2 – Teaching and Learning Theories for Classroom • Part 3 – Teaching and Learning Theories for BTW Note: Part 1 must be conducted first; however, the State or provider may choose which order to conduct Part 2 and Part 3.

Part 2 – Teaching and Learning Theories for Classroom (4 day training) • Module 9 – Introduction and Overview • Module 10 – Preparing to Train & Overview of Peer Teaching Assignments • Module 11 – Techniques & Challenges in Classroom Management • Module 12 – Program Enhancements (Online/Virtual Classroom, Simulators) – Optional • Module 13 – Student Assessment and Evaluation • Module 14 – Coordination Between Classroom and BTW Instruction • Module 15 – Peer Teaching Presentations • Module 16 – Classroom Course Wrap-Up • Module 17 – Classroom Teaching and Learning Theories Knowledge Test 2
