  1. RT 304: Construction SustainabilityWho Wants to be …. More Sustainable? Tom Szkut, ArcelorMittal, host and emcee

  2. Who wants to be … More Sustainable ?

  3. Mr. Alex Sajak, Game Show Host

  4. Who wants to be … More Sustainable ?

  5. Learning Objectives of Presentations • Appreciate importance of addressing construction-phase sustainability issues • Learn about catalog of 54 sustainability actions, by construction function • Understand that screening tool is available to assist in prioritizing actions • Be aware of several metrics and Implementation Index • Understand that all elements of research are linked in 7-step process

  6. RT 304 Research Objective & Scope • Objectives: provide construction management teams with guidance for determining, implementing, and assessing effective sustainability solutions during the construction phase of capital projects. • Scope: • Considers all 3 dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social, economic • Limited to construction phase implementations • Excludes safety-only actions

  7. Construction Sustainability: RT Definition … involves the processes, decisions, and actions during the construction phase of capital projects that enhance current and future environmental, social, and economic needs while considering project safety, quality, cost, and schedule.

  8. Research Product “Building Block”: Construction Phase Sustainability Action (CPSA) Action that offers sustainability benefit in some form from implementation during the field construction phase of capital projects

  9. CPSA Catalog: 10 Information Fields Number and title Primary/secondary construction functions Description Sustainability impacts Influence on conventional project perf. criteria Ease of implementation 3 project conditions that leverage benefits 2 sustainability output metrics 2 common barriers to implementation References

  10. CPSA Characteristics • Type/frequency of sustainability impacts • Influence on conventional project objectives • Ease of implementation

  11. Research Methodology

  12. Survey of Industry: How much of this are we doing?

  13. Did you know? CPSA Current Usage 63% Sometimes applied 22% Frequently applied

  18. Ms. Sally Doowright, PMP, Doowright & Daughters Constr.

  19. CPSAs by Construction Function

  20. 8 Construction Function Categories • Project management • Contracting • Field engineering • Site facilities & operations • Craft labor management • Materials management • Construction equipment management • Quality management, commissioning, & handover

  21. Project Management • CPSA #3 • Contractor Sustainability Program and Recognition System • Contracting • CPSA #12 • Sustainability-friendly Project Delivery Methods

  22. CPSA #3 Contractor Sustainability Program and Recognition System

  23. CPSA #3 Description The project team and its subcontractors/suppliers should plan and implement a sustainability program with a recognition system that rewards innovation and effectiveness. Within the plan, identify sustainability program responsibilities and performance expectations for key personnel. Provide rewards for sustainable performance that meets or exceeds program expectations. The reward program should address all three dimensions of sustainability. Integrating a suggestion program may be helpful.

  24. CPSA #12 Sustainability-friendly Project Delivery Methods

  25. CPSA #12 Description The traditional linear project delivery methods and contract agreements can undermine sustainability objectives and cause rework later in the project. Owner, with the help of contractors, should identify ways in which conventional project delivery models could be more sustainability-friendly. Contractors should understand the sustainability-enhancing additions to the contract, review warranties/liabilities associated with the implementation of sustainable construction methods, and allocate risk and accountability fairly to stakeholders who can best control and mitigate those risks.

  26. Did you know? CPSA #30 Source of Onsite Power

  27. Who wants to be … More Sustainable ? Ad on #48 Right-sizing

  28. CPSA Screening Tool 2 Questions you’re asking… Which of the 54 actions are best for my project? How can I decide?

  29. CPSA Screening Tool 2 types of Tool inputs: • Relative priorities/weightings of desired Sustainability impacts • Environmental • Social • Economic • Applicability of project conditions

  30. CPSA Screening Tool Example of Tool output:

  31. CPSA Screening Tool: Tested • Successfully tested on ArcelorMittal’s Iron Ore Process Plant Project (Mexico) • Results insightful, yet reasonable

  32. CPSA Screening Tool - For smart phone or tablet First for CII !!

  33. Did you know? CPSA Screening Tool Adjustable Sustainability Priorities

  34. Who wants to be … More Sustainable ? Ad on #42 Packaging Waste

  35. Construction sustainability metrics

  36. Implementation Index: Input Partial Screenshot

  37. Predominant Output Metrics • Percent of projects with Sustainability Performance section in project reports; • Cost savings; • Portion or volume of total waste recycled or diverted from a landfill; • Street value of recycled material; • Equipment environmental performance; • Size of carbon footprint from project; and • Number of complaints from community, agency, or camp residents.

  38. CPSA Implementation Index Tool: Tested • Successfully tested on Fluor’s Eagle P3 Commuter Rail Line Project (Denver) • Project benchmark was established • Learnings from Index helpful • Tool refined from feedback

  39. CPSA Implementation Index: Benchmark From Conversion of Industry Survey (n = 33)

  40. Tying It All Together

  41. Implementation Process:7 Steps

  42. What have you learned?

  43. Key Research Outputs • Catalog of CPSAs • 54 actions in 8 construction functions • Industry survey of current & future application • Construction Sustainability Process • CPSA Screening Tool, and for field input • Construction Sustainability Metrics, including CPSA Implementation Index • CPSA-specific Implementation Guidance • Learnings from pilot demonstrations
