  2. Content * Definition Sources Effects Solutions

  3. Definition of Noise Pollution • It means the sounds above the level that people cannot accept or tolerate. • The unit for sounds is decibel (dB). The sounds that above 65dB are noises.

  4. <<<Daily examples of sounds at different levels Time of people can withstand different level of noises

  5. Sources of Noise Pollution Noise pollution is mainly caused by the following factors: • Traffic Noise • Construction Noise • Industrial Noise • Aircraft Noise • Domestic Noise

  6. Traffic Noise • Noise is given off from the engines or horns of vehicles like buses and cars. • When they travel at a higher speed, the noise is greater.

  7. Construction and Industrial Noise • The construction work (e.g. piling) usually lasts for 3-5 hours per day and produces a lot of noise. • Some noise is generated from machinery and air-conditioning in factories.

  8. Aircraft and Other Noise • During the take-off and landing of flights, the noise produced by planes is great. • Shops on the street usually play music or promote products at a high volume. • Noise is also produced by the public in densely-populated districts.

  9. Impacts of Noise Pollution • Effects on human • Disturbing people's thoughts and feelings • Causing different diseases • Effect on government and industry • Time lost on the job • Payments of worker's compensation for diseases

  10. Hearing Loss • A result of society's rising levels of noise • A common occupational and environmental hazard • The risk has spread to young adults

  11. Solutions Heavy industrial area should be separated from residential areas Using noise attenuating materials and construction techniques

  12. Solutions • -Developing quieter aircraft • Controlling land development around new airports • Restricting work hours in designated areas • Regulating machines used

  13. What You Can Do To Help Reducing Noise • Pet nuisance • you must prevent your pets from causing any noise nuisance to your neighbours. • Don't let your dog bark or whine or leave it alone for long periods.

  14. What You Can Do To Help Reducing Noise • Musical noise • Keep the volume as low as possible • When not using headphones or an earpiece, set the bass control at a low level as the "bass beat" can be particularly irritating. • Avoid practicing early in the morning or during the late evening/night. • If the instrument has an amplifier, turn • the volume down or preferably use • personal headphones.

  15. What You Can Do To Help Reducing Noise • Renovation noise • Don't carry out renovation works between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. or on Sundays or general holidays; otherwise, obtain a valid Construction Noise Permit from the Environmental Protection Department before carrying out the works. • Don't leave powered tools running idly • Complete the work as quickly as possible • Abide by any house rules imposed by the building management in respect of renovation noise such as restriction on working hours.

  16. What You Can Do To Help Reducing Noise • Others • Ensure you do not create excessive noise disturbance while playing outside, especially by yelling and engaging in noisy pastimes. • Keep your electrical appliance in good maintenance condition to avoid causing noise
