  1. Tactile Display Patent summary

  2. Hydrogel based tactile-feedback touch screen Two structures have been proposed in this patent. Digitizer panel converts a detected contact position into an input understandable by a controller. “When one or more electromagnets are energized, a portion of the gel layer above the energized electromagnet deforms to form a dimple.” So the actuattion mechanism is not that the gel is sensitive to certain stimulus but because magnetic particles is driven by electromagnetic field.

  3. Second structure: The actuator is the current sensitive gel. The gel is driven by applied current through top and bottom electrodes.

  4. The top and bottom electrodes matrix are orthogonal. The current flow through gel and cause the gel swelling.

  5. Light-induced shape-memory polymer display screen - Microsoft’s patent The light-induced shape-memory polymers contain cinnamic groups and respond to agitation light of an ultraviolet band The display device further includes a topography-changing engine configured to project agitation light of an ultraviolet band towards the display screen. So the stimulus is UV light.

  6. User interface system - Tactus’s patent In this patent, Tactus technology proposed a tactile display interface system. General idea is using a flexible material as a surface layer 110 to seal a cavity. The cavity can be filled with fluid or air. The deformation of surface layer can be generated by a displacement device or a heat.

  7. In order to prevent user “pressing too much”, the substrate includes a lattice-like membrane as supporting layer.

  8. Multi touch with multi haptics - Apple’s patent

  9. Haptic actuator is using a piezoelectric cantilever.
