  1. NEW SEATING CHART! • Numbers will be drawn for your new seating chart when the bell rings.

  2. WARM UP 12/17 • Write down 7 things you know about bones. • Write down 5 things you want to learn about bones.

  3. Notes Ch 6 12/17 The skeletal system

  4. Skeletal system tissues: • Bone • Cartilage (connective)

  5. Functions: • Support – (structure for the body) • Protection – (bones around organs) • Movement – (place for muscles to attach to) • Mineral storage • Hemopoieses – makes blood cells Child – all bones Adult – sternum, ribs, vertebrae, illium crest femur, humerus

  6. Development OSTEOGENESIS – bone formation Bones form 3 months after fertilization from the mesoderm layer (still cartilage, but shape of bones) OSSIFICATION – the process of cartilage changing to bone (until about 3 yrs old)

  7. BONE - main parts • DIAPHYSIS – main long portion • EPIPHYSIS – the 2 ends • ARTICULAR CARTILAGE – thin layer of hyaline cartilage; cushions ends • MEDULLARY CAVITY – hollow center of bone; contains marrow • MARROW – liquid connective tissue that forms blood cells • ENDOSTEUM – membrane lining the medullary cavity

  8. 7. PERIOSTEUM – * dense tissue covering bone * contains blood vessels that branch into bone * made of osteocytes – bone cells 8. COMPACT BONE – area with tightly packed osteocytes 9. SPONGY BONE – area with loosely packed osteocytes

  9. Long – arms, legs, hands, feet Short – wrist, fingers, ankles, toes Flat – ribs, skull, shoulder blade, pelvis… Irregular – ear, vertebrae, jaw… 4 types of bone

  10. Long bone – has all parts Short, flat, irregular bone – only spongy, compact, periosteum, and marrow

  11. LABELING • Medullary cavity • Endosteum • Marrow • periosteum • Epiphysis • Diaphysis • Epiphysis • Articular cartilage • Spongy bone • - • Compact bone

  12. FOSSA – shallow depression or indentation FORAMEN – hole through a bone TURBERCLE – small projection (bump); not on ends (< pea size) HEAD – rounded expansion from a neck-like area FISSURE – narrow slit-like opening 6. CONDYLE – round projection on the end 7. TROCHANTER – large projection; not on end (>pea size) 8. SPINUS PROCESS – sharp or pointed projection 9. CREST – raised long edge 10. FACET – smooth flat end BONE MARKINGS LAB
