The purpose of this induction is to assist you in understanding your obligations not only to your self and the team, but to the concept that “ Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility” Doing the task safely improves quality and efficiency, but most important of all, doing it ensures that you and your work mates return home to your loved ones unharmed.

  6. HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY Trident’s goal is to eliminate or minimise potential health, safety & Environmental hazards & aspects associated with the construction activities performed. Trident will ensure all employees and contractors working under Trident’s supervision have stringent understanding of health, safety & Environmental legislative requirements, observe company standards for health, safety & the Environment and conduct themselves in a manner which is not only conducive to their role but also of their fellow workers. Trident will ensure: Management personnel are committed to provide and maintain a safe work environment, including work conditions, practices, procedures for all employees, and facilities for consultation. A high level of safety awareness and sound safety culture is developed throughout the company. The utmost is done by the company to minimise hazards within the workplace in order to prevent accidents from occurring and to prevent danger to the public and other contractors. All persons employed by Trident and any contractors or other persons involved with the operations of the company, have a personal responsibility to the company, their fellow workers, themselves and the general public to adopt and maintain appropriate health and safety standards in all their work activities. That training is provided to employees to enable them to fulfil their job in a safe and healthy manner.
  7. In addition, Trident requires its employees to: Comply with company policies, procedures and rules at all times. Ensure a safe and tidy work area or site is maintained at all times. Ensure that they know exactly how to do their tasks safely before they start work, or take measures to consult with the Director and/or Foreman prior to undertaking potentially hazardous activities. Report any hazards and give ideas on how to improve safety to their supervisor or safety personnel within the company. Trident recognises its obligations and general duty of care arising from its undertakings. Trident will periodically review this policy and update it where necessary. At Trident NO task is so important as to compromise health and safety or the Environment and appropriate consideration must be given to determining a safe and healthy work method for all activities.
  8. FITNESS FOR WORK Trident have a Zero Tolerance for Drugs and Alcohol Reporting to site under the influence of alcohol or drugs will result in disciplinary proceedings. When reporting for work you should be physically, mentally and emotionally ready for work. You are responsible for your own safety. Help prevent accidents wherever you can. Any person taking prescribed medication must advise the site safety advisor.

  10. Safe Work Method Statement A SWMS is a comprehensive Task Based Risk Assessment. It looks at ways of minimising individuals risk through a series of steps (not to fine and not to broad). A SWMS should be completed or lead by experienced people who know the task well. SWMS’s Complete the front page and include all persons involved A SWMS reference number will be required from the Safety Department Ensure all persons have the required information associated i.e. MSDS, Permits, Licenses Process of a SWMS Step through the job steps Identify the hazards to you or others after doing the steps Enter the initial risk What controls can be taken to reduce the chance of the unwanted hazard occurring Can the job be done safely? If the risk is still high after the controls are implemented, do not undertake the job and see your Supervisor Note: SWMS need to be Prepared by ALL those involved with the task
  11. Task Observation Sheet Trident prides itself on its commitment to ensuring it provides the best people for the job. To ensure our people are compliant and working to a high standard. We engage are supervisory and management teams to have one on one conversations on current activities happing on site. We are looking for safe work behaviour and leadership Compliance to Trident and site policy's and procedures Compliance to HSE Legislation We do these in a positive manner and provide feedback on positive work attributes and advice for corrective actions on areas of concern. Trident aspire to have the best employees for the job and understand communication with its employees and clients is key to achieving this objective.
  12. PERMITS Permits are required for: Working at height Confined space Permit to dig (ground disturbance permit) Hot work Isolation – i.e. like Electrical , Gas, High Pressure Steam or liquid etc. Please Note: Your Site May Very if in doubt ask your supervisor. Training is required for Confined Space. Please see the HSE Advisors for a Permit who will liaise with appropriate people i.e. survey, client etc
  13. SAFETY SIGNAGE All site personnel must comply with all safety signage at all times Do not cover, remove or block site signage Blue: Mandatory Green: Safety/1st-Aid Yellow: represents a Warning/Caution Red :Fire/Danger
  14. MSDS Requirement There are 5 main types of hazardoussubstances Asphyxiate – depletes atmosphere of oxygen e.g.: nitrogen Toxic substances - can cause serious injury, major organ damage and death e.g.: pesticides Flammable substances - liquids and gases which form a combustible mixture with air Explosives - mixtures and compounds that cause explosions. Corrosives - break down human tissue and other substances e.g. acid, caustic soda A MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) must be kept with the SWMS should any form of Chemical is used as a Safety practice. A MSDS will advise the appropriate PPE to be worn safe storage and application of the product along with relevant First Aid should it be required.
  15. USE OF TWO WAY RADIOS ON SITE When you use the two-way radio system, you must: ENSURE RADIOS ARE RETURNED TO DOCKING STATION AT END OF SHIFT AND ALL FAULTS REPORTED Swearing or using offensive language is not permitted Restrict radio Traffic to related business Keep radio Traffic to a minimum - do not hold ‘long-winded’ conversations. The two-way radio system serves two purposes; Safety communication Production communication
  16. MOBILE PLANT All plant brought to site must comply with all relevant legislation, standards and codes of practice, and a Plant Arrival Checklistcompleted; Cranes and Boom type concrete pumps maybe checked using individual inspection checklists (see the Principal Contractor for further information) All plant will be inducted into site and issued with an induction plant sticker or as directed by the client. If the item of plant is found to be unsafe a “Danger/Out of Service” tag will be attached. Routine inspections and maintenance (if required) must be documented. When approaching moving plant, eye contact with the operator is required to ensure he is aware of you. Pre-start log books must be completed DAILY prior to starting work along with a completed SWMS.
  17. EXCAVATION SAFETY Working in or around excavations can be hazardous if safety procedures are not strictly followed. Never enter an excavation if you are not certain that the excavation is protected from collapse using support structures such as trench boxes or batter the sides. Work in an unsupported or un-battered trench can be conducted if the safety of the trench has been assessed by a competent and authorised person. Never drive or park a machine or vehicle close to an un-supported trench or excavation. Never take a petrol, distillate or LPG driven machine into a trench or excavation unless there is adequate ventilation. Never jump into a trench or onto a pipe or similar object that is in a trench. Always ensure you are signed onto the relevant SWMS
  18. Driving on site General Rules Australian road rules apply Adhere to the Traffic Management Plan In wet weather conditions, reduce all speed limits by at least half All LV drivers shall yield right of way to mobile plant. Seatbelts must be worn. Always ensure you have signed onto the SWMS for the sites TMP Licenses Drivers of all vehicles and equipment must hold a current driving license and be an approved driver for the project
  19. ELECTRICAL SAFETY Testing and Inspections are done Quarterly and colour tags are tagged as to the period indicated below Inspection tags on Equipment Indicates that they have been tested. R U G B Y Red: January to March Green: April to June Note: Black tags are for non portable electrical equipment that need to be inspected annually – and White Tag for six monthly Blue: July to September Yellow: October to December
  20. Lifting and Rigging Equipment Correct storage: Chains/slings are not to be used if: Damaged, or Have not been inspected or tagged Defective lifting equipment must be disposed of, and removed from the register MUST ALWAYS: Checked by a competent person Must be trained in use of lifting equipment Don’t overload (Check SWL) Lifting chains shall not be used for towing Correct shackles, lifters are used with chains and slings Ensure a SWMS is in place for all lifting activities
  21. POWER TOOLS Always protect yourself with a Residual Current Device when using hand-held power tools. Do not use a tool if the casing, cords or plugs are broken or damaged and not tagged with the current period Tag. Never adjust tools without first switching off and removing the plug from the power outlet. Only use power tools you are trained in the safe operation of never remove guards from power tools Ensure you are wearing the appropriate PPE for the task and tool!
  22. HOUSEKEEPING Housekeeping is an essential element of a safe, healthy workplace. Trident wants ALL it’s employees to ensure there work and lunch areas are constantly maintained and should they see a Hazard report it immediately A workplace which is clean, free of slips, trips, and spills, with equipment stored correctly is a SAFE WORKPLACE
  23. DAILY REQUIREMENTS Complete a pre-start and sign on to it prior to commencing any tasks Check with your Supervisor and confirm work program for the day Prepare / Review and sign onto SWMS for work task & have a copy of the SWMS on site with you Ensure you have attached any associated Permits and MSDS with the SWMS Ensure correct PPE is available and worn at all times while on the work site Record and report any hazard you observe and any improvements you believe possible Maintain good housekeeping standards. (DO NOT leave rubbish lying around) Undertake daily / weekly inspections as directed. These are to be given to the HSE Department
  24. WEEKLEY REQUIERMENTS Toolbox meetings will be held by the client how ever Trident management will attend/conduct no less than one per month if it is your responsibility to attend and participate constructively. In the event that you cannot attend, make arrangements with your supervisor to get a special briefing about the issues discussed at the missed meeting. Intentional absence from the Toolbox Meeting can result in disciplinary action. This is an opportunity for you to raise any issues or positive feedback on your workplace where as a team we can work together to ensure a Safe workplace for all.
  25. Training, Competency & Induction Requirements Training is primarily given through on-the-job training when requested, or when identified as being required by supervisory staff. Where however, a particular level of training, competency or a certificate is required to perform a particular activity, no Trident employee is to undertake work without the adequate level having been attained. All Site Person must be inducted to work on this site All Personnel will hold a Construction Safety Awareness Card (White/Blue Card) All Site Personnel must attend the Mandatory Trainings as stipulated by the Client before starting work on this site All High Risk Work is required to be carried out by a qualified /competent person on all operators of machinery/plant and persons conducting high risk task. If unsure what is classified as High Risk please see your supervisor or refer to your HSE Management Plan Note: High Risk Work needs to be assessed by Worksafe Endorsed Assessor
  26. Mobile Phones & MUSIC PLAYERS Mobile phones, must not be used by personnel who are: Operating, directing or ‘spotting’ plant; Directing crane operations; Directing traffic; Driving plant or vehicles; If you receive a call on the work site: stand still, away from operations; out of traffic or walkways. MP3 Players/ i-pods are not to be used by anyone on site.
  27. Incident Reporting An incident is defined as: Any injury A near miss Equipment damage Environmental harm Loss of production Upon immediately observing an incident, you are required to take action: Control and make the situation safe Inform your Supervisor Your Supervisor will then be required to carry out an Incident Report with the support of the Safety Department Failure to report on incidents immediately will result in disciplinary action
  28. Return to work Trident Labour Hire is committed to injury management, preventing injuries and creating a safe working culture for every employee Trident has a dedicated Injury Management Coordinator who will liaise with an injured worker (where medical treatment is required) and the medical practitioners, from the moment a work-related injury occurs until the worker no longer requires further treatment A CARE Plan pack can be obtained from your Area Manager for injured workers to guide them through the steps involved in the injury management process.
  29. Emergency Site specific emergency and evacuation rules are established by the principal contractor and are to be followed at all times by Trident personnel The types of incidents that may create an emergency can include Medical Mobile Plant and vehicle incident of failure Bomb Threat Inclement Weather Fire Ground or structural collapse In the event of an emergency, call Emergency, Emergency, Emergency On the designated CH Advise type of emergency and assistance required The Site has a First Aid Room know this location and your First Aiders Do not disturb the area of the emergency other than to protect personnel or to prevent further damage only if safe
  30. Hydrocarbon Spill Response CONTROLThe source of the spill close valves, stop pumping CONTAIN The spill. Use absorbent booms/matting/peat/earth CLEAN UPThe contaminated material recover spill, bag used materials, excavate contaminated soil COMMUNICATE Inform the Principal Contractor and Trident’s Safety Department
  31. Environmental Do not pour any substances down storm water drains. Place all rubbish in bins provided. Do not throw any rubbish over boundary fences. All hazardous substances to be disposed of according to manufacturers instructions. Report all environmental incidents immediately to Site Management. Stockpiles must not be placed near storm water drains, grates or drainage ditches.
  32. Manual handling When approaching the problem of safe manual handling of materials there are three important questions you should ask: Can mechanical equipment be used in place of manual handling? Can the load be lightened or suitably shaped for manual handling? Have you been trained in proper methods of lifting and carrying? Trident have developed a SWMS for Manual Handling ensure you have read and understood it before starting work Use lifting equipment where possible 2) Plan the lift 3) Ensure route is clear 4) Avoid lifting heavy or awkward loads 5) Avoid bending your back to pick up a load Also, hold the load as close as possible to your body and avoid twisting while lifting or carrying the load
  33. EMPLOYEES RESPONSIBILITIES The responsibilities of the Workers within Trident include, but are not limited to, the following: To know and work in accordance with Trident OH&S systems and expectations. To cooperate and comply with all safety instructions given by the site's safety management personnel. To immediately notify the Director and/or Sales Manager and/or Area Manager of any unsafe situation and not to work in any way that could endanger themselves or their fellow workers. To use appropriate personal protective equipment where required and to report any breakages or failures that need replacement or rectification. To ensure any item, sign, barrier, guard, equipment, etc provided to ensure health and safety of personnel on site is not tampered with, modified or removed. To suggest ways of eliminating hazards and improving occupational health and safety on site.
