  1. Measurement and Conversion Notes

  2. I. US Customary Units (English Units)

  3. To convert one English unit to another English unit to another English unit, multiply by a ‘unit factor” from the formulas. When two qualities are equal one can be placed over the other to form a fraction. This fraction is equal to one.

  4. Examples: Change each quantity to the indicated unit. 1.) 24 pt = _________qt. Solution: Look for a “unit factor” that contains both pints and quarts. 1qt = 2pt Multiply by the unit factor. Be sure to put the units you want to change from in the denominator. 24pt * Cross cancel pints and multiply.

  5. Examples: Change each quantity to the indicated unit. 2.) 8 gal = _________qt Solution: Look for a “unit factor” that contains both gallons and quarts. 4 quarts = 1 gallon Multiply by the “unit factor”. Be sure to put gallons in the denominator.

  6. Examples: Change each quantity to the indicated unit. 3.) 80 oz = __________lb Solution: Look for a “unit factor” that contains both ounces and pounds. 16 oz = 1 lb Multiply by the “unit factor”.

  7. Examples: Change each quantity to the indicated unit. 4.)  12 yd = _________ft Solution: Look for a “unit factor” that contains both feet and yards. 1 yd = 3 ft Multiply by the “unit factor”. Be sure to put yards in the denominator.

  8. Examples: Change each quantity to the indicated unit. 5.)  12 gal = _______ pints Solution: Look for a “unit factor” that contains gallons and pints. There is not one. First, cancel gallons. Then change quarts to pints.

  9. Examples: Change each quantity to the indicated unit. 6.)  4 yd=________in Solution: Look for a “unit factor” that contains yards and inches. There is not one. First, cancel yards. Then change feet to inches.

  10. Examples: Change each quantity to the indicated unit. 7.)  64 cups=________qt Solution:

  11. Examples:  8.)  Which weighs more, a hamburger or a 5 oz hamburger? Solution: Convert either unit to the other so the units will be the same. so the 5 oz burger is larger.

  12. Examples 9. Robin wants to make a large recipe of apple tart that calls for 12 cups of apples. If Robin has 7 pints of apples, does she have enough? Solution: Change 7 pints to cups. Robin has 14 cups, but she only needs 12 cups, so she has enough apples.

  13. II. METRIC UNITS

  14. Length One millimeter is about the thickness of a dime. One centimeter is about 1/2 inch. One meter is a little more than a yard. One kilometer is about 2/3 of a mile. Weight One milligram is about the weight of a single strand of hair. One gram is about the weight of a single raisin. One kilogram is a little more than 2 pounds. Volume One milliliter is about what an eyedropper holds. One liter is slightly more than 1 quart.

  15. III. Metric to Metric Conversions

  16. Examples 1) 752.6 m =_______km

  17. Examples 2) 195 mm = ________m

  18. Examples 3) 8.4 L = ______ml

  19. Examples 4) 385g = ______kg

  20. Examples 5) 5.7 kg = ________mg

  21. Examples 6) 263,000 mm = ________ km

  22. IV. Metric to US and US to Metric

  23. Examples 1) 752.6 m =_______km 2) 195 mm = ________m • 8.4 L = ______ml

  24. Examples 4) 385g = ______kg 5) 5.7 kg = ________mg 6) 263,000 mm = ________ km

  25. IV. Metric to US and US to Metric

  26. Examples 1) 12 in = ________cm 2) 16 lb = ________kg 3) 58 cm = ________in

  27. Examples 4) 32 kg = ________1 lb 5) 42 qt = _______L 6) 25 L = _______qt

  28. V. Other conversions

  29. Examples 1.) 18 weeks = __________ days 2.) 12 days = ____________ minutes

  30. On Your Own Practice: Convert to the indicated units using unit analyzes. For English to Metric or Metric to English, round to the hundredths place unless the decimal is a terminating decimal.
