  2. Vision Northern Kentucky University will become a preeminent, learner-centered, metropolitan university recognized for its contributions to the intellectual, social, economic, cultural, and civic vitality of its region and of the Commonwealth.

NKU Profile • NKU has grown 46% since 1985, making it the fastest growing University in the Commonwealth of Kentucky • Current enrollment of nearly 14,000 students • Current year enrollment increased by nearly 7% • Enrollment is projected to grow to 14,600 students by 2006! • 75% of NKU students are from the Northern Kentucky area • 90% of NKU’s 31,000 alumni live in the region • 1,500 new alums every year! • We are your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors!

Academic Programs • 76 degrees now offered! • Associate degrees in 12 areas and 52 bachelor’s degree programs • Graduate degrees in 12 academic areas • Only MPA program in Greater Cincinnati • Constantly adding innovative new programs to meet community need: • New undergraduate degrees in Nursing and Environmental Science • New graduate programs in Computer Science, Information Systems and Teaching (MAT) • Established a new College of Education

Academic Quality • Small, personal classes: average class size of 23 • Recent surveys of seniors indicate a 95% employment rate • 95% of the seniors surveyed last year rated NKU instructional quality as excellent or good • Endowed professor positions have been established in Integrated Science, Music, Bio-Computing, and Art • NKU’s first endowed chair has been established for the College of Education

Academic Successes • Honors program attracts exceptional students from all over the country: • Student involvement has increased 350% over the past 3 years • A minimum ACT score of 26 is required for acceptance; many have 30+ ACT scores • 100% of premed graduates accepted into medical school of choice for each of the last 3 years • Chase Law School: • 86% of Chase College graduates passed 2002 Kentucky Bar Exam as compared with statewide average of 78% • College of Education students exceeded both area and national scores on the 2001 National Teachers’ Exam

Residential Life • NKU houses over 1,000 students on campus • Due to a waiting list, 400 new housing spaces will be available by 2003 • Of the nearly 200 area students living on campus: • 29% list Boone County as their permanent residence • 23% list Campbell County as their permanent residence • 47% list Kenton County as their permanent residence

Institute for New Economy Technologies (iNET) • NKU consultant recommended enhancing Information Systems program to support Northern Kentucky economy • Using NKU technological, human and programmatic resources to attract technology-based businesses to the Northern Kentucky region • Covington E-Zone, Airport area, locations near NKU • Investing over $8 million in new campus technology, including creating 100 smart classrooms by 2003 • Introduced new graduate degrees in Information Systems and Computer Science • Focus on high level of student internship

  14. METS • Metropolitan Education and Training Services (METS) is an employee based public service partnership that has served over 2000 employees in just 2 years of existence. METS enhances workforce readiness across the entire metropolitan region. METS Center - • 43,600 sq ft state-of-the-science corporate learning center, located in Boone County, at I-275 and Mineola Pike, schedule to open in January, 03 • Brings any training or educational program from anywhere in the world to Northern Kentucky • See: www.useMETS.org

Community Partnerships • Fidelity Financial Service’s only college-based service center is hosted by NKU, and employs 162 students • Fidelity Executives teach Finance Courses • 5/3 Bank, has established an Entrepreneurship Institute involving over 300 students in the last year • Ashland Inc. has donated over $1 million dollars to fund the Summer Science and Mathematics Camps for P-12 students and the Scientific Instrumentation Fund • The Nursing Department has partnered with Health Alliance to fill the critical shortage of nurses

Coming Soon To NKU • New Student Union • $27.5 million project, already supported by $11.8 million from NKU students • Additional $15.65 million to complete • Current facility designed for 4,000 students; today’s enrollment is nearly 14,000 • New Welcome Center • Creates an open and friendly environment to greet visitors to the university community • Renovation of Old Natural Science Building • Investment in structure upgrades and conversion to more usable classroom space will increase NKU’s classroom capacity

Annual Economic Impact • NKU’s direct economic impact is an estimated $162.2 million • NKU’s estimated total economic impact is $324.4 million • NKU is the 11th largest employer in Northern Kentucky - providing nearly 1,700 jobs • NKU generates more than 9,500 jobs in the Northern Kentucky-Greater Cincinnati area through direct spending

Public Funding • NKU receives less state • funding than any other • public university in the • Commonwealth • Fees and tuition account • for 50% of NKU’s public • funding, compared to 27- • 40% for the other public • universities • For each dollar paid by NKU students the Commonwealth matches 97 cents • In contrast, for each dollar paid by students from another state university the state matches between $1.51 and $2.74
