  3. Coalitions should be: • Issued Oriented • Structured • Focused to Act on Specific Goals • Committed to Recruit Members and Organizations with Diverse Talents and Resources

  4. Coalition Recruitment :“Recruiting the Right People” • Coalition should reflect the target population that one is trying to reach. • Cultural and Ethnic Representation • Community & Faith Based Organizations • Cancer Service Provider Representation

  5. Partnerships with: • Religious Groups • Community & Faith Based Organizations • Civic & Grass Root Organizations • Community Members • Schools/ Universities • Neighborhood Associations • Sororities/Fraternities/Fellowships • Political Leaders/Teachers/Physicians • Businesses/Health Care Community, etc..

Benefits of a Coalition: • More effective & efficient delivery of programs/ Innovative Ideas • Members become involved in new and broader issues without the sole responsibility for developing solutions • Elimination of Duplication of Services • Improved Communications/ Improved Public Image • Better Needs Assessment • Consistency of information and increased availability of resources

  12. Disadvantages : • Turf Issues • Mistrust • Limited Resources/Diverted Resources • Not Willing To Share Resources • Some Partners may not be able to move forward without higher authority approval • Leadership Issues • Outside Pressures

  14. Successful Coalition Have: • A Common & Unifying Purpose • Members are actively involved in goals, objectives and activities • Clearly Defined Operating Procedures • A Clear Definition of the roles members play

  15. Successful Coalitions Have: • The support and influence of key leaders in the community • Effective communication among members • Leadership responsibility and commitment of time from all members • Procedures for measuring its progress and how well it is meeting goals and objectives
