    2. The American Legion Story The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veterans organization, devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a not-for-profit community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.

    4. The American Legion Programs VA & R: Local Service Officers helping veterans get the benefits they deserve. Boy’s/Girls State: Teaching basic government and citizenship concepts to our youth. Legacy Scholarships: Securing college educations for the children of fallen heroes. Heroes to Hometowns: Assisting with transitions

    5. The American Legion Impact Last year Legionnaires put in 2,290,256 hours of community service. We awarded nearly $4 million dollars in scholarships. Over 2,000 kids attended Boy’s/Girl’s State and nearly 200 attended Boy’s/Girl’s Nation Legion posts have chartered over 2,800 scouting troops nation-wide.
