  4. Volunteer Opportunities For the Pre-Dental Student

  5. Why Volunteer? • Volunteering is something that dental schools are going to be looking for! Make sure that you are continuously engaging yourself in the community by volunteering. • ALSO, volunteering is a way to give back to those less fortunate than yourself. Not only will you be making a true difference in your community, you will be able to better appreciate all that you have! • FINALLY, volunteering is an awesome way to make new friends or to get to know the students in the Dental Club. Try arranging to meet other members at the same event so you get your hours done while having fun!

Maggie’s Place • Maggie’s Place is a home in Phoenix that provides living quarters, food, and assistance to pregnant women wishing to achieve their goals and welcome their babies into a happy environment. • Volunteer duties vary depending on what the House needs at that time. In the past, babysitting, house-cleaning, and cooking have all been performed. • In order to volunteer, you must fill out a volunteer form located on their website, www.maggiesplace.org. • You can also call or e-mail their Volunteer Coordinator Alli: • 480-491-0446 • tempe.volunteers@maggiesplace.org

St. Mary’s Food Bank • St. Mary’s Food Bank is a non-profit organization with the mission of easing hunger in Arizona. • This is a wonderful opportunity to get volunteers hours done! • Jobs include sorting, boxing, and bagging food, as well as completing administrative and fundraising support. • If interested, visit their website volunteer.services@firstfoodbank.org OR call at 602-242-FOOD

Murphy Dental Clinic • The Murphy Dental Clinic is in need of volunteers at their kids’ dental clinic. • This is a great way to meet Dr. Volcheck, who runs the CASS Dental Clinic for the Homeless • Also, as a pre-dental student, you can finish your volunteer hours you need for the club as well as gaining valuable experience inside a dental clinic. You will also have the experience of serving underprivileged people. • If interested, visit the website: www.cassdentalclinic.org

  9. Saint Vincent de Paul • Saint Vincent de Paul is a non-profit organization committed to serving the poor. They often do this by providing meals to the homeless. • Saint Vincent de Paul is searching for Family Evening Meal Lead Coordinators for this fall! • They will be in charge of all volunteers from 3:30 to 6:30 at the Phoenix Saint Vincent location (I-17 and 7th Avenue). This is a great leadership opportunity to add to a resume • If you’re not interested in being a Coordinator, you can still help out! Regular volunteers are also needed to work from 4 to 6 any night of the week.

Become an Alternative Spring Break Leader • Take part in this exciting opportunity to combine service and leadership!  • Changemaker Central will be coordinating three Alternative Spring Break programs in the Spring 2013 semester and is looking for students to participate in a year-long program that will train Alternative Break Leaders.  Program participants will assist in planning the trip, recruiting volunteers, and managing trip logistics.  • Email volunteer@asu.edu to obtain an application with further information.

HPSP (Health Professions Scholarship Program) • Army, Navy, Air Force (Direct Commission to CPT) • Serve your country while practicing dentistry • Guaranteed paycheck right out of school • No malpractice insurance while you are practicing! • Great Residency programs • Work alongside other professionals in Dentistry • Military will pay for your Dental School!!! • All tuition, books, supplies, plus a monthly paycheck!  Be sure to be at our meeting October 4th!

  15. Research! • Go to http://uresearch.asu.edu/home to find research opportunities • Look up your professors to see what they are researching • Start thinking of something Dental related to present at our Spring Research Symposium!
