  2. CRITERION A CULTURAL & CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH

  3. Choose Sketchbook Pages That Show A Strong & Direct Relationship Between Your Formal Work and Your Research (Investigation) HL = 30 Pages SL = 20 Pages

  4. ASK YOURSELF METACOGNITION To what degree do your selected IWB pages show you have analyzed, considered, compared & reflected upon art from other cultures& time periods? Give specific examples from your IWB pages and the connection with your works of art.

  5. LETS PRACTICE 1: Choose one of your works of art and find its corresponding research pages 2: Describe 3: Analyze 4: Interpret (Consider) 5: Judge (Compare) UNIVERSAL CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF ART 6: Reflect upon it in comparison to art from another time period and/or culture. The next slides will guide the process

  6. DESCRIBEDescribe the work without value words ("beautiful" or "ugly”) CITE THE WORK Title & Artist(s)
 When and where was the work created? DESCRIBE THE ELEMENTS Line Shape Form Color Value Texture Space DISCUSS TECHNICAL QUALITIES Tools, materials, instruments DESCRIBE SUBJECT MATTER What is it all about? Are there recognizable images?

ANALYZEDescribe how the work is organized as a complete composition DESCRIBE HOW THE ELEMENTS ARE ORGANIZED USING THE PRINCIPLES OF ART Balance, Emphasis, Proportion, Repetition, Pattern Movement, Rhythm, Unity, Variety IDENTIFYsome of the similarities throughout the work ex: repetition of lines, patterns, directional movement IDENTIFY points of emphasis in the work ex: specific scene, figure, movement. IDENTIFYrelationships between or among subjects & characters

INTERPRETDescribe how the work makes you think or feel DESCRIBE THE ESPRESSIVE QUALITIES YOU FIND IN THE WORK What expressive language would you use to describe the qualities of how the work makes you feel What particular emotional adjectives would you use EXPLAINif the work reminds you of other situations you experienced Analogy or Metaphor DISCUSS how the work relates to other ideas or events past or present how the work relates to other subjects

  9. JUDGE
Present your opinion of its success or failure DESCRIBEthe work’s qualities that makes you feel it is successful or a failure COMPAREthe work with similar work that you think are good or bad DISCUSS how original is the work and why you feel it is original or not

  10. PURPOSE & FUNCTION
Thoughtfully consider the meaning & purpose of the art DISCUSS the purpose and function of your work of art in relationship to the purpose of the art made by a different culture or time period? Why was the work made? What was it’s function? COMPARE & CONTRAST What are the similarities or differences of the meaning & function?

What does it all mean to you? EXPLAIN How the contextaffects the work (the background information, the underpinnings) and the impact it makes in contemporary society? How does it connect to modern man and art-making?

THUMBNAIL SKETCHESMedia & Techniques Exploration & Experimentation DISPLAY a careful record of well developed skills and experimentation with a variety of techniques, media, and materials INCLUDE Verbal & Visual records of your creative thought process DISCUSS Problem solving strategies and decision making in the exploratory sketches

  15. INVESTIGATIONEvidence of clear & coherent strategies & thought process SHOW a clear strategy for your investigation of visual qualities, ideas, contexts. Why did you pursue a particular path for your investigation? Was it successful? Did you adapt? ARTICULATE connections between different works of your art connections between your art & work from other artists DISCUSS influences & connections between your art influences & connections between your art & work from other artists

DEPTH & BREADTHEvidence of broad range of influences SHOW a wide range of influences, ideas & inspirations in the synthesis of your work DEMONSTRATE which influences you pushed further and why DISCUSS how you pushed some ideas to greater depths of understanding through your mastery of specific skills or knowledge based on specific ideas of personal interest

  19. VOCABULARYEvidence of correct use of art specific vocabulary INCLUDE numerous and consistent art specific vocabulary used correctly DEMONSTRATE correct use of the elements, principles & formal analysis of art to form criticism of your work and the work of others

PRESENTATIONEvidence of clear, coherent, neat IWB pages DEMONSTRATE an interesting aesthetic quality (design - layout) of your IWB/SB pages DEMONSTRATEa high quality of creativity and structure in your verbal entries (writing) which will also be evaluated DEMONSTRATEsincere connection with your research with neat, legible and visually interesting composed pages

INTEGRATIONEvidence of a strong relationship of IWB and Studio Work DEMONSTRATE relevance between your pages & studio work EXHIBITobvious and direct correlations between your IWB-SB and the art you create.! SHOW evidence of evolved, supported, justified & explained ideas in your IWB DISPLAY a continuous progression of ideas that occur before, during, and after a work of art is created.
