  2. Routine and Manual workers • ~30% smoking rates in Wales • 13% for Managerial professions in Wales • Increasing inequality between these 2 groups • Smoking throughout pregnancy more common in R&M workers (24%) • 25% of children in Wales living in a R&M household where an adult smokes at home • All figures from Tobacco and Health in Wales (2012). All figures from 2010.

  3. How do we engage smokers in the workplace? Identify businesses employing high levels of R&M workers Target workplaces employing >50 staff Find named HR/Employer health leads within workplaces Promote the importance of workplace cessation - letters, information etc Follow-up workplaces

  4. Incentives • Go into businesses and talk to them • Show cost-savings from supporting staff • Offer on-site support to staff (in groups) • Businesses who were not ready to engage immediately followed up

  5. High-levels results from the NE • Previous year (2009/10) 13,225 quit dates set (QDS) by R&M workers (23.6% of all QDS) • Following workplace project: 15,580 QDS by R&M workers (26.6% QDS) Rise of 18% QDS by target group

  6. What is best practice? • To offer on-site group support in workplaces • SSS in England achieve higher quit rates through this route
