  2. The impetus for change • Growth and change in size of the club • Recognition of need to better serve elite youth players • Fever/Citadel merger talks

  3. The Process • In December the FWSC Youth Board authorizes and supports: • SWOT Analysis hosted by Mark Yde • Meetings populated by Board members, Director of Coaching, highly qualified coaches & respected managers

  4. The Process • SWOT discussions were far reaching and open forums for looking at “Today’s” Sport Club and “Tomorrow’s” Sport Club • Coaching Structure • Marketing and Development

  5. Primary Focus: Coaching Structure

  6. Past Structure • Teams were “islands”—a loosely affiliated group • Not always even wearing the same uniforms • Some parent coaches, some paid coaches • Rec soccer families unaware we had travel soccer and vice versa

  7. Goals for New Structure • Provide a program that will fit the needs of every family and player • Preserve the FWSC tradition of the parent coach • Provide the highest level of training and competition to every player

  8. Youth Structure Academy Teams U-12 to U-19 Premier Teams U-12 to U-19 Travel Teams U-12 to U-19 U-11 Transition Year Recreational/PDA

  9. Travel Teams • Open tryouts every June • Paid or parent coaches with licensing • Technical Directors, Assistant Technical Directors or paid trainer may be used if team wishes • Teams choose their own names

  10. Travel Teams • Limited travel for games & tournaments • Opportunity to guest play/train with Academy with coach & parent approval • Coaches eligible for in-house coaching education as well as license subsidy

  11. Premier Teams • Open tryouts every June • Paid or parent coaches with appropriate license • Technical Directors provide training a minimum of once a week • Teams choose their own names

Premier Teams • Compete at highest level appropriate to team’s ability and ambition • Outdoor training 2 to 3 times per week; indoor option to train with Academy • Opportunity to guest play/train with Academy with coach & parent approval • Coaches eligible for in-house coaching education as well as license subsidy

  13. Academy Teams • Open tryouts every June • Age group Technical Directors serve as head coaches for each team in age group • Professional assistant coach • Assistant can be an appropriately licensed parent coach • Teams named after German Bundesliga Clubs—eg. FWSC 98B Bayern

  14. Academy Teams • Compete at highest level possible • Three training sessions per week outdoor; two indoor • Out of town tournaments included in cost • Futsal/11v11 winter indoor league play • Performance Training through OZ Strength & Conditioning

  15. Age Group Technical Director Roles • Act as head coaches for Academy teams • Serve as trainer for Premier Teams • Cooperate with other technical directors • Communicate with other FWSC coaches within assigned age groups

  16. Age Group TD Roles • Mentor assistant coaches and apprentice coaches within assigned age groups • TDs stay with age groups, not teams • Club stability • Expert age group coaching • Provide different voices for players

  17. Age Group TD Roles • TD must attend and coach scheduled Academy team games • TDs to see a minimum of two Premier team games per season • Provide formal, written evaluations to Academy players four times per year; Premier twice

  18. Age Group TD Roles • Actively seek licensing and professional development opportunities for themselves and assistant coaches. (Teagarden Fund) • Communicate with TDs of older and/or younger groups to discuss players’ development with potential of providing opportunities to train or club pass up an age group

  25. Age Group Assistant Coaches • Assists Technical Director in designing and executing training plans • Collaborates with Technical Director on short term and long term plan for age group teams • Assists with writing evaluations and meetings with players to review evaluations

  26. Age Group Assistant Coaches • Parent assistant can move up with team, provided they hold or are enrolled in appropriate license for age group • Those who do not wish to obtain the license will be given option to remain as team manager or second assistant coach

Coordination of Functions • Monthly staff meeting of PDA Director, age group, Technical Directors, and DOC • All staff must agree to work within developed framework and club playing philosophy • Seasonal summaries will be written within four weeks to the end of season and provided to the DOC.

Training & Competition • Academy & Premier teams train minimum of twice per week for two hours each session or 3 times per week for 90 minutes each session U-12 & 13 (outdoor) • Academy & Premier teams train minimum of three times per week for 90 minutes U-14 and up (outdoor) • Academy & Premier teams train minimum of twice per week for 60 minutes each session U-12 and up (indoor)

  30. Training & Competition • Academy teams in U-12 & U-13 age groups will play in President’s Cup • Academy teams in U-14 and up will play in State Cup • Premier teams will be encouraged to play in President’s Cup or State Cup if possible

Training & Competition • U-12 and U-13 teams may play a total two additional tournaments during the year • U-14 teams may play up to three additional tournaments during the year • U-15 & up will play four showcases tournaments in addition to State Cup • Travel teams will determine Cup and tournament schedules

  32. Training & Competition • All Academy teams will seek highest level of league play—ISL, ICL/NPL, MRL • Premier teams will play ISL with ability to qualify for MRL • Travel teams will play ISL

  33. Travel Teams 1 - 2 Tournaments Winter Practice $300 -$500 per player- per season

  34. Premier 2-3 Tournaments Winter Training 1-2 X week Tech Director assists with training Asst Coach – Parent Primary Game Coach $500-$600 per player

  35. Academy 4-5 Tournaments Winter Practice 2x per week Conditioning Winter –Spring Technical Director Primary Coach $1000-$1200 per player
