Shock • Your life is going well and you are not prepared for turmoil. • The natural reaction is shock.
Denial • Try to avoid the inevitable • The Doctor must be wrong…. • It could not be her car…
Anger • This anger can be taken out on anything or anyone • Why her? • There can’t be a god…..
Bargaining • God if you do this….I will go to church every week. • Please take me instead….. • If you will just give me one more month…..
Testing • Seek realistic solutions • Utilize all possible treatments
Acceptance • Find a way forward • You may not like it, but you deal with it • Look on the positive side
Sticking and cycling • There is no time frame • Some are stuck in stages longer than others • A person can not be jolted out of a stage by someone else • You may return to a stage do to a trigger
Intro to Freud….. • Freud believe that our personality is made up of the id, ego and super ego (we will discuss this later) • Because of this theory he believe that most of “who we are” is formed at a young age • Much of his psychosexual theory has been discounted…but it is kind of interesting • We have accepted many of his terms in our venacular
Oral stage Birth -18 mo. • An infant finds pleasure through the mouth • Ex. Nursing • If an infant wants to explore something it immediately goes to the mouth. • Have you heard of an “oral fixation?”
Anal Stage18 mo.-3 years • Toddler finds pleasure in controlling his or her bowels. • There are few things a toddler can produce….. • My nephews loved to say..”Aunt Nicole, do you want to see…… • Have you ever been called anal?
Phallic Stage3-6 • Can you guess where they find pleasure? • This is the stage of the Oedipus complex and/or the Electra complex
Final two stages not as important to Freud Children explore and realize the difference between sexes • People begin to repress events in each of the stages and personalities form Latency 6-12 Genital 12 on up
