  1. EIRAC European Intermodal Research Advisory Council Valerio Recagno EIRAC Secretariat PROMIT Bologna November 20, 2007

  2. Climate Change – A Reality

  3. Climate Change – A Reality

  4. Climate Change – A Reality February 2 2007 Paris (IPCC): Increase in average global temperature is most probably due to anthropogenic GHG Sources: IPCC 2007

  5. Climate Change - Sources CO2 emissions in 2004 (tonnes per inhabitant) Source: IEA 2006; European Commission 2007

  6. Climate Change - Sources Source: IEA 2005; IPCC 2007

  7. Climate Change - Sources Transport is responsible for 24% of GHG emissions Traffic congestion makes CO2 emissions to grow by 300% Sources: IEA 2005; WBCSD 2004; IPCC 2007

  8. Climate Change – Emission Trends Source: IPCC 2007

  9. Climate Change – Emission Trends Source: WBCSD 2004; IPCC 2007

  10. Consequences • Total Stop of Terminal Operation in Northern Range • Vessels delayed • Railroads Blocked • Priority is given to Passenger Trains

  11. Consequences • European logistic system gets uncertain, more volume is put into the chain • Capacity terminals decreases (both ends of the “pipeline”) • Performance drops down • European logistic system gets even more uncertain, more volume is put into the chain… “Just in time principle” turns into “Just too much”…

  12. Ways Out • Reduce the use of energy • Make flow of materials more effective • Innovate technology and use it • Geo-Engineering • Direct human intervention in the Earth atmosphere is an option that needed to be looked at (Paul Crutzen)

  13. Ways Out - Potential Potential for GtCO2 emission reduction Source: IPCC 2007

  14. Ways Out: Improve Logistics Source: Buck Consultants Int. 2007

  15. Ways Out: Modal Mix CO2 Emissions for moving 12 tons of freight – East Danube Area Source: D’Appolonia S.p.A. 2007

  16. Combining modes does not come easily… Logistics Interoperability Safety

  17. What do the European Players do? The business society takes the lead with different stakeholders such as: Ambrogio Trasporti; Procter & Gamble; Associated British Ports Holdings; Rete Autostrade Mediterranee; Grimaldi; UPS; Hesse Nord Natie (PSA); ECT; DB Systems; Inform; SNCF; Combipass; Via Donau; DHL; Maersk Sealand Intermodal; Kuhne & Nagel; Schenker…

  18. EIRAC: What is it? • EIRAC is an initiative of the European Intermodal industry, the European Commission and the EU member and associated states. • Launched on May 3rd, 2005 • 50 keyplayers • Contribute to a better repartition between the different modes of transportation to make Europe: • coping with growth • lowering the burden on environment • enhancing competitiveness

  19. What does EIRAC deal with? • Competitiveness of Intermodal transport through: Change, Innovation, Research • Today's repartition between the different type of transportation is based only on traditional parameters: lead time, costs, predictable delivery time • New parameters: safety, security, sustainable solutions, are often considered as constraints • Assumption: market incentives are not enough as a source of motivation

  20. Contribution to change The Strategic Intermodal Research Agenda Proposals for research topics The Implementation Plan The Vision

  21. Future EIRAC activities • Road-Shows • Evaluate impacts of both the Implementation Plan and forthcoming projects • Stimulate the creation of National TPs on Intermodality and Logistics • Progress the works in the three Pillars of research • Prepare and monitor the EIRAC Communication Campaign

  22. Your contribution to reduce the environmental footprint of transport is welcome EIRAC is open to your ideas
