  1. In any article about cosmetic surgery, one of the most important things to cover is the differences between fat transfer and liposuction. So, what are the pros and cons of each procedure? Fat transfer is the cosmetic process of using a skin graft from a part of the patient's body (usually fat) in order to make a more aesthetically pleasing body shape. This procedure is typically used in areas where a normal facelift cannot provide satisfactory results, such as the face, neck and cheeks. Fat transfer will not always be successful, but its success depends on how well the fat is chosen and how much of it can be removed. A liposuction surgeon can remove significant amounts of fat with fat transfer, but fat from the patient's own body is sometimes necessary for this procedure to be successful. The risk of scarring during a fat transfer is relatively low, although some scarring may occur if the fat is not removed well enough. Liposuction allows for the removal of fat from the body, but with the aid of a machine the fat can be heated and squeezed into a small amount of space. Liposuction also requires hospitalization to be performed correctly. One of the pros of cosmetic surgery is that the results last forever. The chances of side effects (pain, swelling, bruising, infection) are extremely rare. Even a small amount of scarring is minimal. Many people are uncomfortable with cosmetic surgery, and it can be expensive. Although fat is removed from your body and reused to reconstruct the area where the procedure was performed, it is still possible for you to develop an allergic reaction to the donor area. Another potential negative side effect is skin discoloration or pigmentation in the area where the surgery was performed. The procedure is the same no matter what, but it may take a while for the skin to heal and for the donor tissue to be absorbed by the body. You will feel sore after the procedure, but your body will adjust to the new shape relatively quickly. The pros of liposuction are that it is a natural and healthy way to lose weight, but the cons are that it can cause irritation to the skin, and some people do not like the idea of their skin being "pigmented". Some people develop pigmentation as a result of liposuction, but many of them are simply sensitive to the procedure. Fat transfer is very successful and usually results in a significant reduction in weight, but liposuction can have even greater benefits. It can be less painful, less expensive, and can provide a firmer, more even tone on the skin. Before you schedule cosmetic surgery, make sure you discuss each procedure with your surgeon thoroughly. Since so many patients are interested in either fat transfer or liposuction, make sure you can find a board-certified cosmetic surgeon in your area who is experienced in both procedures. If you have any doubts about your surgeon, ask about the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure. The surgeon should be willing to answer all questions, but don't hesitate to bring up any concerns with him or her. If you are looking to get some plastic and reconstructive surgery, including a fat transfer, there is no better place to go than Dr. Filipe Padilha – Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon.
