VistA Imaging 760- Background Processor Basics & Beyond Patch 39
Course Faculty Richard Price VistA Imaging Developer OI&T Joan Weil VistA Imaging Coordinator Atlanta VA Medical Center
CourseObjectives This course is an overview of: • Background Processor (BP) functionality • Queue Processor • Verifier • Purge • Storage Management • Mail Management • BP Monitor • Troubleshooting
BP Queue Processor Functions • Distribution of newly acquired Images • Retrieval of Archived Images • Scheduled event management • Disk space management • Site parameter settings
Queue Priority • JBTOHD • PREFET • ABSTRACT • IMPORT • JUKEBOX • DELETE • GCC
BP Servers Drag-Drop Queues to the server or to Unassigned Tasks.
BP Servers Right-click on a server to assign a Log File location and size limit per file.
Queue Manager • Provides a method for: • Purging or re-queuing failed queues • Purging active queues • Re-setting the Active queue partition • Viewing details about queue entries
Queue Manager Right click to show context menu
Queue Manager – Import Queue Right-click a detailed Import queue item to access Import Queue Properties Or select from View menu
Import Queue Status Windows Session File (#2006.82)
Import Queue Status Acquisition Session File (#2006.041)
Import Queue Status Import Queue File (#2006.034)
Queue Purge / ReQueue by Type Failed Queues Active Queues
% Server Reserve • The amount of space (in percentage of total space) that should be kept free for storing new files • The purpose of the reserve is to provide a significant amount of primary storage in the event that the Jukebox share fails or a significant number of RAID shares fail. Set % Server Reserve on the Site Parameters tab
% Server Reserve (cont’d) • Once % Server Reserve watermark has been breached, the Auto-Write location function no longer changes the write location for incoming files. • Mail messages are transmitted, alerting personnel that intervention may be necessary to begin a purge or bring additional storage online.
Raid Groups Purpose: To reduce the number of active storage shares in order to facilitate quicker tape backups (both incremental and full).
Raid Groups (cont’d) • The Auto-Write function will now reset the write location to provide load balancing within the current RAID group • When the % Server Reserve within the group has been breached the Auto-Write will set the next RAID group as the current write group • The site will have the ability to schedule a move to the next RAID Group.
Raid Groups (cont’d) • When the % Server Reserve within the RAID group multiplied by the Purge Factor has been breached, an Auto-Purge is triggered for the next RAID group. • Purge Factor is a number that can be adjusted by the site to offset the length of time a purge will take. Default =1. Set to 2 once you populate next RG. Auto-Purge Breached
RAID Group Guidelines Sites can choose a configuration that suits them best. Either • Use the initial configuration where all the shares are in the same RAID Group. • Distribute the shares among multiple RAID Groups.
RAID Group Guidelines Where all the shares are in the same RAID Group • The new images will be evenly distributed among all the shares. • Nightly incremental tape backups as well as monthly/quarterly tape backups must be done on regular basis on all the shares
RAID Group Guidelines Distribute the shares among multiple RAID Groups. • Fill the shares in each group to the Server Size then switch the current RAID group to the next. • New image files will be distributed over all the shares assigned to that group. • Nightly incremental tape backups as well as monthly/quarterly tape backups must be done only on that RAID Group. • When it has reached capacity, a final full backup should be done on all the shares and nightly incremental tape backups and monthly/quarterly tape backups started on the next current write group.
Network Location Manager • Provides a graphic interface for RAID Group configuration
Network Location Manager • Edit > Network Location Manager • Provides a creation and configuration method for VI platform storage devices
Network Location Manager Right-click to View or Modify Properties
Network Location Manager Add New Location

Offline Platters • When the jukebox is physically full and space is needed to add additional platters, the OFFLINE IMAGE utility MUST be used prior to physically removing the platters. This utility will mark the images as being archived and the Verifier will skip these while processing. • Refer to Imaging Tech Manual, section 9.5.2.2 and 2.3 for further details.

Imaging Site Parameters Administrative Settings
BP Verifier • Performs multiple patient integrity checks • Sets or clears invalid file location pointers in the database • Checks for mismatches between image file contents and the database • Checks for mismatches between specific fields in the text files and the database • Re-creates missing file types, when possible
Verifier Setup • All setup is done on the Verifier window in the Scope area. The user can select either a range of Image IENs or all IENs. • Range can be forward or backward. • Check Image Text : If checked, the Verifier will compare specific fields in the text files.
