  3. Vietnam veteran (VV)study Aim: • To identify whether a system of focused and coordinated self management and self management support can improve the health outcomes of VVs with alcohol-related chronic conditions.

  6. Participant inclusion criteria • Not residing within the Northern Division of General Practice area or rural areas • Vietnam veteran • Chronic condition • Alcohol Usage Disorders Identification Test (A.U.D.I.T.) Score of 8 or above

  7. Exclusion criteria • Cognitive impairment or physical or psychiatric distress which would prohibit informed consent or inability to cooperate with the clinical and research process

  8. Methodology • Randomised clinical trial • 140 - 160 participants required • Repeated outcome measures, ie at: • baseline • 3, 6, and 9 • 18 months

Data Collection • AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) • PIH (Partners In Health) • AQoL (Assessment of Quality of Life) • ADAS (Abbreviated Dyadic Adjustment Scale - relationships) • HADS (Hospital Anxiety & Depression Scale) • DARS (Dimensions of Anger Reactions Scale) • PSTD checklist (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder-military) • Health care utilisation data • DSM-IV – Psychiatrist • Clinical Global Impressions Scale
