  2. Purpose of This Experiment • To use the behavior of a gas to determine the identity of an unknown compound (calculate the molecular weight of the unknown). • Work in groups of 2 CHE116

  3. Part A Part A is not done in lab because of the danger of mercury. CHE116

  4. Part B • Do part B twice; each person in the group does a sample of the same unknown (write the data and calculations next to trial 1) • Use a hotplate for your water bath • Any condensed water trapped underneath the ‘wings’ of the aluminum foil will ruin the results. • Please return the pins and rubber bands when done.   5. Calculations • The molar mass is grams / mole • The grams of sample will be determined by using the balance and calculating the mass by difference • The moles of sample will be determined by using the ideal gas equation, PV = nRT, solve for n (P is given by instructor, V is volume of flask, R is constant, T is temperature of bath) CHE116
