  2. Key Vocab: Annotation

  3. Objectives: I will annotatean article so I can readclosely and critically. By marking up text, I will be able to identify its main ideaand supporting detailsmore easily. I will mark the textin such a way that I can return to it and easily find the important information.

  4. Quiz Time! Take turns quizzing a shoulder buddy... make sure they can list the steps of annotating IN ORDER without looking at their notes.

  5. Practice Today, you will be reading an article on your own, showing evidence of close reading and annotation. Be sure to: • Create a purpose by turning the title into a question. • Underline details that answer your purpose. • Circle words and phrases you don't know. • Star important details. • SHOW YOUR THOUGHTS on the paper... next to EACH paragraph, write a sentence summary or a question. • Reread a second time, highlighting ONLY THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAILS (10%).

  6. Post-Reading • Answer the reflection questions at the bottom of the article. • Write a journal reflection that responds to the reading. What do you think?

  7. Author’s Purpose to persuade? to inform? to enlighten? to entertain?

  8. Close Reading Grab a copy of The Reader's Handbook and silently read pages 642 and 643. At the bottom of 643 is a definition... rewrite this in your own words so you remember its meaning.
