These students may choose to take Instructional Focus, if wanted.

  10. Instructional Focus (IF) • Instructional Focus meets every other day for 50 minutes. • Students who fail unit exams and/or need remediation are assigned to tutoring with content teachers to review missed material and prepare students for retest. • Teachers monitor student progress through Infinite Campus to ensure all classwork, homework and tests are complete. • Teachers provide acceleration activities for those who are excelling. • Students who are absent are provided time to learn missed material and make up missing assignments and tests due to absences. • Students complete homework, reading and research assignments. This has proven especially beneficial for students who participate in extra curricular activities which require them to stay at school late each day.

  11. To complete registration for freshman year… Students will register for seven course credits from the registration bulletin. • All students will take a math, science, social studies and English course. Middle school teachers have registered students for these courses based on the students current academic progress and work ethic. These courses are listed on your student’s registration form that was sent home on February 11th. • Students will take Instructional focus and personal fitness on an A/B schedule. JROTC students will take Instructional Focus and JROTC Drill. Students who take honors world history or 2 math courses do not HAVE to take instructional focus, but may take it if they choose. If Honors World History students choose to not take Instructional Focus, the students will take personal fitness and health instead.

  12. To complete registration for freshman year…(cont’d) • All students get to choose two additional courses to take next year. • Choices include Band, Chorus, Art, CTAE, Foreign Language, PE, etc. Students may choose to take an academic elective, also, like AP Human Geography, Psychology, Sociology, etc. • Courses taught at ECCA are 2 credit classes so one class at ECCA counts as two choices.

STEM students can participate in all extra-curricular activities offered at ECHS. • STEM students have the option of returning to ECHS 7th period. These students can enroll in study hall, physical education, band, or chorus during their time here. • ALL students will complete registration for ECHS as normal.  STEM students will complete a STEM specific registration form at a later date. The course requests letter sent home on March 20th will include STEM courses students are registered for .

  19. Work Based Learning (WBL) Internship/Apprenticeship available for juniors and seniors that allows students to receive course credit and intern at a company while attending high school. • Take a CTAE Pathway course • Maintain good grades, discipline and attendance • Be eligible to drive…Get Your License!!! • Prepare for Gulfstream by taking Engineering, Logistics, Ag Mechanics, Business or Automotive pathway classes • Complete application in spring of sophomore or junior year

  20. The Freshman Life • ECHS does not have a homeroom period. Students must report to class at 8:20. Students are tardy if they arrive to class after 8:25. Students are marked absent if they arrive to class after 8:40. • ECHS has three lunches. The student’s lunch is determined by their 5th period class. Each lunch has approximately 550 students. Students sit wherever they want, they do not eat with their assigned class or with a teacher. • Attendance is taken and accounted for by each class period. Awarding credit for classes and eligibility is based upon each period’s attendance, not attendance for the whole day.

  21. The Freshman Life • A student may earn a total of seven credits each school year. Most courses are one credit classes, but some are ½ credits and some are two credits. • All ECCA classes are 2 credits. Two class periods will be allotted in the student’s schedule if he is taking a course at ECCA. • Instructional Focus meets for 50 minutes every other day. Students receive tutoring from content teachers during this time. They also rework failed assignments and complete make up work from absences. Students read, research and finish homework during this time too. • Students will receive one credit for personal fitness or JROTC Drill, which meets on the days Instructional Focus does not.

  22. The Freshman Life • To receive a learner’s permit to drive, students must have good attendance. Students must receive a Certificate of Attendance from front office prior to taking written test for learner’s permit. The certificate verifies the student is enrolled and is in good standing in regards to attendance. • We strongly suggest students take the course recommended by the 8th grade teacher, but you may complete a course override form. You may get one of these from Ms. Hayes, the ninth grade counselor tonight, or you may come to ECHS later to get one. Course override forms must be received prior to the end of the school year so students can be scheduled correctly. • If a parent signs an override, the student’s schedule will not change, even if the student is failing the course or has changed their mind about wanting to take the course. The override form states this.

  23. The Freshman Life • Students who take a course with “Honors” in the course title receive 5 points added to each nine weeks grade. These points are included on transcripts and when determining class rank. However, the five points are removed by the Ga Student Finance Commission when computing HOPE GPA . • Students who take a course with “AP” in the course title receive 5 points added to each nine weeks grade. These points are included on transcripts and when determining class rank. However, the five points are removed by the Ga Student Finance Commission when computing HOPE GPA but then .5 is added back to the student’s course grade, which is calculated on a 4.0 scale. • Dual Enrollment courses do not earn any “honors” points. • Students in Honors Ninth Grade Literature have a summer reading assignment. This assignment counts two test grades for the first nine weeks. Ms. Danna Jones has more information, please see her tonight or check her school webpage in May for the assignment.

  24. Scholar Endorsement • English/Language Arts - Minimum of 4 units (Honors 9th Lit, Honors 10th Lit, AP Lang, AP Lit, or DE English Course) • Mathematics - Minimum of 4 units (Accel Coord Alg/Analy Geom A, Accel Analy Geom B/Alg 2, Accel Pre-Cal, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, or DE Mathematics course) • Science – Minimum of 4 units (Honors Bio I, Honors Phys Sci, Chem, AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Environmental Sci, Physics, DE Science course) • Social Studies – Minimum of 3 units (Honors World History, AP Gov’t, AP European History, AP US History, AP Econ, AP Human Geography, or DE Social Studies Course • Modern Language – Three sequential foreign language courses

  26. Testing • Students are administered Milestone tests in eight high school courses: Algebra I, Geometry, Ninth Grade Literature, American Literature, Physical Science, Biology, United States History and Economics. Milestone assessments count for 20% of a student’s final course grade. • Most other high school courses administer a local end of course test (LEOCT) The LEOCT count 20% of a student’s final course grade. • LEOCTs and Milestones are cumulative and assess students over content learned throughout the year.

  27. HOPE Scholarship Information • Students must earn a 3.0 academic GPA (only math, English, science, social studies and foreign language course grades are used for calculation) • Courses taken in middle school for high school credit are not a part of the HOPE GPA calculation (these classes are a part of the student’s high school transcript and are used when determining class rank). • The GPA listed on your child’s transcript in Parent Portal includes all courses taken during high school, this is not his/her academic GPA used for HOPE. • Pass four HOPE rigor courses • HOPE GPA can be accessed through the student’s Ga Futures account (www.gafutures.org) after they have completed a year of high school.

  28. HOPE Rigor Requirements for Class of 2023 • Students must complete at least four courses that meet the rigor requirement. • Classes that meet the rigor requirement include: • ALL academic Dual Enrollment (DE) courses • ALL academic Advanced Placement (AP) courses • Algebra II, College Readiness Math, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, AP Statistics • Forensic Science, Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy • French II, French III, Spanish II, Spanish III

  29. GaFutures.org Ga Futures.org is an online resource to help Georgia students and their families prepare for their future after high school. Some of the activities you can do on GaFutures.org include: • Take an interest inventory • Research careers • Search for colleges by programs or locations • Explore programs and majors • Prepare for SAT, ACT, and state tests • Learn how to create a resume and how to interview for a job When in high school, students can create an account with GaFutures.org. This will enable students to take advantage of the activities listed above, access their HOPE GPA, and request transcripts to be sent to post secondary institutions.

  30. Testing for 10th Grade Students • All10th grade students will take the PSAT in October for free (paid for by the state of Georgia). The PSAT is a practice test that is similar to the SAT. • 10th grade students have the option of taking the PreACTfor free (paid for by the Effingham County Board of Education). The PreACT is a practice test that is similar to the ACT. Students will sign up to take this test in 10th grade, if they want. • Counselors review results of the two assessments to guide students to the test that would be best for them to take for college admission. • Two year and technical colleges do not require an SAT or ACT score, rather students take the Accuplacer test.

  31. Career, Agriculture, Technology Education (CTAE) • To complete a pathway, students must take three courses in one area. • ECHS offers 25 options for CTAE pathways. • Students may complete more than one pathway, if their schedule allows. • Students may begin a new pathway their 10th grade year if they are no longer interested in the pathway they began their 9th grade year. • CTAE courses taught at ECCA (Effingham College and Career Academy) are two class periods; students receive 2 credits for each of these classes. This would count as “2 choices” for students.
