  1. CIS 1-A Introduction to Information Systems Stefan Bund / Week 2

  2. Welcome to Week 2 • Where -- • I will have you look at your new data, discuss it • look at new data, of an economic nature • learn new skills in lab related to graphing in Excel

  3. My big goal • Is to teach you the culture of communicating with graphs, charts, and other infographics • And model how to deliver a message that is grounded in data • And help predict big things – using data • So Excel is my primary tool

  4. part 1: what you learned • The homework from last week forced students to manage several challenges: • learning to collect data thoughtfully, with an attitude toward the design of experiments • did your questions help you collect the right data? • How should you preserve the data you collect? How can a spreadsheet be used in an experiment’s administration?

  5. This week, you’re ready to grow • Where you’ll be • learning to work with excel, to graph and display data • Deciding what kinds of graphs help visualize your data • Presenting your findings to a team of researchers, maybe via ppt, maybe in an essay?

  6. So let’s dig in and find out your results • let’s learn some new skills related to data, graphing, and presentation • let’s make a graph based on your data • what kind of graph works best • work with a team of two, or by yourself to generate a graph for each question

  7. graphing in excel • place your data in a table, using a columnar format • run the graphing tool: • once your columns contain a domain of subjects along the left column • and a range of values in the right column, representing the quantitative measure of each item • it’s time to graph!

  8. try it • give it a try! • be sure to have data in a final, counted format • perhaps run a SUM on a column, to derive how much value is associated with it (more on this later)

  9. youtube it! • http://youtu.be/7vkIB7VN75k • if you’re a youtube type of person

  10. Can I get a… nice chart to display? • copy / paste your graphs into a power point presentation • label and describe each graph on each slide • I will walk around, visit you, and elect a few presentations, one on each major question you researched (friday session only, sorry) • Can I borrow your nice new chart to show everyone?

  11. discuss • how did your results paint a picture of how we use energy now? • what are Riverside residents spending on energy? • what are their intentions to drive the price of energy down, in future expenses?

  12. part 2: extrapolating trends • extrapolate: using a behavioral trend in a graph to predict future trends • we need existing and historical data • we need to identify trends that drive in a direction, or vector

  13. where is energy headed? • let’s discuss the world of energy • what things cost, project the future costs of different brands of energy • coal, solar, natural gas, crude oil • then let’s make our prediction how we’ll power future homes, cars • then predict when we’ll get there

  14. what’s efficient now? • http://en.openei.org/apps/TCDB/

  15. where the oil is in america • US Energy Information Administration, Short Term Energy Outlook Supplement: Key drivers for EIA’s short‐term U.S. crude oil production outlook

  16. installation costs cause alternatives to be far costlier now, price per module must descend • courtesy IER

  17. US holdings in nat gas keep descending in price • a run up in natrual gas processing contributes to price decline for natural gas Text • http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/

  18. gas and oil prices oeprate in tandem

  19. crude oil is in a state of dramatic price gain now

  20. expensive fuel causes home building to decline

  21. new cars will get efficient, fast * • *but not for middle income buyers honda fcx, available in santa monica now

  22. price of solar panels drops 2x every four years

  23. where will the price of solar tech go? • this projects the price of solar modules, which are the building blocks of solar panels

  24. if you had $100 million, how would you spend it? • Near Zero,How Low Will Photovoltaic Prices Go? An Expert Discussion, Mason Inman, 6 December 2012 (available at: http://www.nearzero.org/reports/pv-learning)

  25. when will major grids come online using solar power? • Near Zero,How Low Will Photovoltaic Prices Go? An Expert Discussion, Mason Inman, • 6 December 2012 (available at: http://www.nearzero.org/reports/pv-learning)

  26. when will solar produce energy for cities? • grid parity keeps receding into distance, but not for long • https://www.alliancebernstein.com/abcom/global_landing_page/index_page.htm

  27. solar panels operate at roughly 15% efficiency • solar panel, average efficiency on market • http://sroeco.com/solar/solar-panel-efficiency-tiers

  28. solar panels will dramatically increase efficiency • if only 15% of the solar energy received by panels is converted into energy, there is much more energy to capture, and become available • new panel research has created manufacturing processes that create 43% panel efficiency (a tripling in output) • when efficiency increases dramatically, it pushes the date of grid parity forward, or certifies it on time • http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=nanowire-solar-photovoltaic-cell-achieves-record-efficiency

  29. hence, where will the price of solar go? • Near Zero,How Low Will Photovoltaic Prices Go? An Expert Discussion, Mason Inman, • 6 December 2012 (available at: http://www.nearzero.org/reports/pv-learning)

  30. Near Zero,How Low Will Photovoltaic Prices Go? An Expert Discussion, Mason Inman, • 6 December 2012 (available at: http://www.nearzero.org/reports/pv-learning) with cheaper panels, how quickly will its usage rise?

  31. when does solar replace coal? • 2020

  32. solar vehicles will derive combined benefits from a cheaper grid here in cali

  33. solar shifts power generation off the grid • and back into your hands, to support your lifestyle

  34. so what will the future look like? • next week we will take this critical research milestone of 2020 to speculate on how that affects a critical part of your life • your house

  35. student research • students will download a spreadsheet related to the breakdown in age in Riverside County • what kind of housing will we need to build? • will older homes be upgraded and retrofit, or torn down? • will we simply need to create a brand new city, to handle growth?
