  3. STEM Getting StartedYou already have! Terminology: STEM, STEAM, STREAM (IE) Challenges, Problem Based Learning, Project Based Learning Engineering Design Process- Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve

  4. Relevance & Rigor All STEM practices are standards based for the grade level. We cannot waste a minute not focused on the goal of mastery for TN State Standards.

  5. Relevance & Rigor STEM is for all students. STEM increases thinking and problem solving skills (at all levels) and is naturally differentiated. Partner and group work is a part of the process.

  8. Mayflower Challenge Questions How did your team decide what type of boat to build? What evidence do you have to support your success level? Did you decide to make improvements? Why or why not? If you could do this challenge again, what would you do differently?

Other Classroom Integrations Kindergarten has STEM Fridays 1st aligns with curriculum and active stations 2nd aligns with curriculum and active stations 3rd aligns with curriculum and fewer stations, RTI2 4th align with curriculum and inside recess, RTI2 Encore(PE,music,library,STEM class) aligns with curriculum and additionally has STEM Fridays Within the classroom, stations are set up for inside recess!

  10. STEM Class-take our ideas and make them work for your students 1st 9 wks.- College and Career; Job vs. Career STEM Class Research by Grade Level Career Focus ~Required Education ~Average Salary ~locations for employment College and K-2nd group research 3rd-4th individual research

  11. STEM Class-take our ideas and make them work for your students 2nd 9 wks.- Understanding technology, coding

  12. 3rd 9 wks.- One and done challenges (excellent vocabulary) STEM at home: Inventions Project not required, not a competition

  13. 4th 9 wks.- K.I.T.E. Festival- Space past years- My Food, My Body, My Health; Force and Motion, The Mysteries of the Deep Partnership with TTU

  14. Ms. Nash focuses on the theme for the K.I.T.E. Festival during the last nine weeks to make sure all students have experiences with the chosen theme. This also enhances the learning for students who are able to attend.

  15. Do: • Find out who is naturally talented with technology and interested in STEM. • Encourage others to share what has worked in their classroom with professional peers.(confidence builder) • Use the STEM terminology that fits your building.

  16. Do: • Accept the failures; they are proof that you are trying. Failure models learning for students and peers. • Publicize what you do to encourage partnerships. • Tweet! @PSES_Pups

  17. Do: • Focus on what you CAN do. Problems are solutions waiting to be discovered.

  18. Don’t • Wait to get started. Start small and let it naturally grow. • Become overwhelmed. Let the naturally talented STEM teachers soar and share their gifts.

  19. Don’t • Limit who participates; some teachers will shock you with their STEM interests, talents, and projects. All are encouraged at all times.

  20. Continuous Improvement • Keep learning and encourage those around you • Model being the learner • Model new apps, programs, games • Find your champions and make STEM the “thing” to do, so our students will be prepared for their future
