  6. What are Keywords? Keywords are specific words or phrases that employers use to find the right candidates. • Job Titles • Product Names • Technical Terms • Industry Jargon • Software/Hardware Packages • Job-specific Buzzwords • Degrees/Certifications • Professional Organizations

  11. New Resume Organization • Outline format for blocks of text: • Use BOLD CAPITALIZED keywords to begin each block of text. • Re-organize text by keyword, not chronology • Years of experience: • Begin each paragraph of the Specialized Experience section with the number of years of experience.

  16. Choose a Better Word • Action Verbs: Verbs that specifically describe what the subject of the sentence is doing. • Goal is to describe your activities with the most direct language.

  19. Revision Tip # 1 Avoid Run-On Sentences • One sentence = one job. • Find the verband use it. • “The committee had made the • following recommendations” • “The committee recommends the • following”

  20. Revision Tip # 2 Watch Capitalization • Stick with capitalizing proper nouns and official titles. • If you can’t figure out the rule: Be consistent.

  21. Revision Tip # 3 • Check the Tenses • Describe current work in present tense. • Describe past work in past tense. • Never write a resume in future tense. • “Develop mentoring program.” • “Developed mentoring program” • “Will develop mentoring program.”

  22. Revision Tip # 4 • Use the Active Voice • Remember, this is about YOU! • Describe your actions. • Was sent to international symposium to represent the firm. • Represented firm at international symposium.
