  1. Brinar Plates What Are Brinar Plates? Brinar Plates are a category of abrasion-resistant, quenched and tempered steel plates produced by the Salzgitter Group (and supplied globally). These wear-resistant plates combine high hardness with good mechanical strength and are designed for applications where surfaces are subjected to heavy wear and abrasion due to hostile operating conditions. Brinar is commonly manufactured in several grades, including Brinar 400, Brinar 450, and Brinar 500 depending on hardness and wear-resistant requirements. Manufacturing & Treatment Brinar wear plates are produced using a water-quenching and tempering process: Material is heated to ~900°C, then water quenched. Optional tempering is applied depending on product specification. This process yields a high-strength microstructure with excellent abrasion resistance. The plates can be cut thermally and welded using standard procedures, but thicker plates may require preheating before welding: For Brinar 400, preheat is recommended from ~30 mm thickness. For Brinar 450 and 500, preheat is recommended from ~10 mm thickness. Grades & Hardness Brinar plates are available in multiple grades with different hardness ranges: Brinar 400 Surface hardness: Approx 360–440 HBW at room temperature. Typical thickness availability up to ~80 mm. Brinar 450 Surface hardness: Approx 410–490 HBW at room temperature. Comparable grade with higher wear resistance than Brinar 400. Brinar 500 Ranked for even higher hardness (often near or above 480 HBW). Suitable for most severe abrasion conditions.

  2. Chemical Composition Depending on specific grade and thickness, Brinar steel plates have the following typical maximum chemical composition ranges (example for Brinar 450): Element Max % 0.26 0.7 1.6 0.025 0.01 ~1.0 ~1.05 ~0.6 ~0.005 Carbon (C) Silicon (Si) Manganese (Mn) Phosphorus (P) Sulfur (S) Chromium (Cr) Nickel (Ni) Molybdenum (Mo) Boron (B) (Composition may vary slightly by grade and thickness.) Typical Brinar 400 plates have a slightly different composition range (e.g., C 0.2 max, Si 0.5 max, Mn 1.7 max, etc.) for wear-resistance purposes. Mechanical & Wear Properties Brinar plates combine high hardness with good toughness. Typical Hardness & Mechanical Range (by thickness): 3–80 mm: Hardness ~425–475 HBW, yield strength ~1100–1300 MPa 80–100 mm: Hardness ~410–475 HBW, yield strength ~1050–1300 MPa 100–130 mm: Hardness ~390–475 HBW, yield strength ~1000–1300 MPa (These values are representative for Brinar 450-type abrasion plates.) Plate Sizes & Production Brinar plates are typically stocked and supplied in standard industrial sizes: Thickness: ~5 mm to ~150 mm Width: ~1,500 mm to ~2,500 mm Length: ~6,000 mm to ~12,000 mm These sizes allow flexibility for fabrication in heavy industry, mining, and wear-resistant applications. Heat treatment conditions include Normalised (N) and Quenched + Tempered (Q+T). Surface protection finishes may include various industrial coatings such as PVDF, PE, HDP, SMP, or EP for handling/transport protection.

  3. Applications Brinar plates are used in abrasion-intensive environments such as: Mining and material handling equipment Stone mills and conveyors Crusher liners and screens Hoppers and chutes Cement and bulk material plants Scrap presses and vibrating screens Their wear-resistant properties make them ideal for components that undergo heavy sliding and impact wear. Advantages High abrasion resistance and hardness relative to conventional steels. Good weldability and formability when following proper preheating procedures. Versatile length and thickness availability for industrial fabrication. Multiple grades allow tailored performance for different wear requirements. Summary Brinar plates represent a family of quenched and tempered, high-strength wear-resistant steel plates produced in grades such as Brinar 400, 450, and 500, each offering specific hardness ranges suited for different levels of abrasive wear. These steel plates are widely used in heavy machinery, mining, and material processing applications where surface wear resistance is critical.
