  2. What Do Phlebotomists Do? • Phlebotomists (PBTs) work directly with patients. The laboratory depends on the phlebotomy technician to collect quality samples from the patient to produce quality laboratory results. To do this, the phlebotomy technician must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence with patients while drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe, and reliable manner.

Phlebotomy Technician Labor Market and Salary Information Summary • Median annual wage in May 2018: $34,480 • $16.58 per hour • Number of Jobs2016, 122,700 • Job Outlook, 2016-2026: 25% (Much faster than average) • Employment Change, 2016- 2026: 30,100 Employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 25 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and other locations will need phlebotomists to perform bloodwork.   4. Where Phlebotomists Work • Phlebotomists work in many different facilities including: private laboratories, hospital laboratories, reference laboratories, blood banks, medical offices, and clinics. • Most often, phlebotomists work under the direction of a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

  6. Application Process 1. Apply to the College; may be completed online or in person2. Take the English placement test to place in English 111, College Composition I, NOTE: Students who have successfully completed ENG 111 or its equivalent with a grade of C or better, and the course appears on the official NVCC transcript, are exempt from the placement test.3. GPA of 2.0 or better at last school attended.4. View this online information session ; write down the session code 2385. Follow the instructions on the program webpage to access the online application; enter the session code where indicated Application periods for fall and spring are included in the Program Application Requirements form . The form is located under the How to Apply link on the program webpage

Then What? • Student Services will verify your application • Your application will be forwarded to the program office. • The first 18 student applications received meeting the college policies for admission (see college catalog) will make up the next upcoming class. • You will receive a welcome letter from the program office with registration information and instructions related to completing the required health history; criminal background check; random urine drug screen. The random urine drug screen and criminal background check must be completed prior to beginning of classes. The health history form to include immunizations records must be completed prior to clinical practice course • If your program application is received, but not among the first 18, you will be notified. You are eligible to resubmit a new application for the next upcoming class.

Requirements Prior to Clinical Practice;Specific Information will be provided upon acceptance to the program • Current CPR for Healthcare Providers • Completion of online safety tutorials • Completion of BBP and HIPAA tutorials • Current physical; within the last year to include documentation of the ability to meet the essential functions as required to practice in the profession; and documentation of the following immunizations: 1. Hepatitis B 2. MMR –Measles Mumps Rubella 3. 2-step TST - Tuberculosis 4. Varicella Zoster - Chicken Pox 5. Tdap

  11. Grading Students must achieve a “C” or better in both the MDL 105 lecture and the MDL 105 lab to progress to MDL 106, the clinical practice course.
