  3. All about gerbils There are 81 different kinds gerbils in the world. Gerbils are mammals. All mammals have hair on their body. Baby gerbils drink milk from their mother. Gerbils are in the rodent family. Gerbils can be many colors. They can be brown, black, gray, and white. An adult can be about four inches long. Its tail is as long as its body. A gerbil lives four to five years. A gerbil walks on all four legs. It often stands up on its hind legs. When a gerbil stands up it uses its tail for balance. It is also nosy. So it often stands up just to look around.

  4. What do gerbils eat Gerbils are herbivorous, which means they eat green plants, seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, and grains. They will also eat pieces of carrot and celery. Don’t give them too much fresh food or it might get sick.

  5. Gerbil teeth Gerbils have teeth that grow nonstop. Gerbils will gnaw on almost anything. Gerbils have to gnaw on things or else their teeth will over grow. A piece of wood is good to chew on. Gerbils also like to dig and make tunnels.

  6. What is nocturnal? Gerbils are active day and night. But they are most active around midnight. Gerbils are quiet. Sometimes they will squeak. Their squeak is soft.

  7. How to take care of a gerbil Gerbils make good pets. The cage You can keep two adults and babies in a ten-gallon aquarium or cage. They will get along well together. When the babies grow up, move some of them to another home. Keep only about four adults together. That way there will be plenty of room.

  8. Litter Keep about an inch of litter on the floor of their home. Wood shavings make good litter. Change the litter when it gets messy. Gerbils are clean. They like to live where it is clean. Give your gerbils a few clean rags or empty toilet paper rolls. The gerbils will make nests out of the rags or paper.
