  1. Our System Solar System By: Jacqueline Lopez

  2. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star… • How I wonder what you are? • What is a star or a planet? • Where are they found? • What isOuterSpace? • Let’s find out, get Ready to embark on aUniversal Adventurethat’s “ Out of this World.”

  3. Our Solar System • In the universe there are hundreds galaxies with thousands of solar systems within them. Within these solar systems we can find planets, stars, comets and many other amazing objects. Our solar system is found in the Milky Way galaxy. Our solar system is kind of like a neighborhood where all our planets live. In our neighborhood there are nine planets. All of which are very different, just like people. There are also thousands of comets and asteroids that come to visit us. Our solar system is a very elaborate place. So let’s begin to EXPLORE!

  4. Comets and Asteroids • Comets are space traveling ice formations that were left behind during the creation of our solar system. • Comets are visible to the naked eye on certain days of the years. (Make a wish) • Asteroids are rocky formation that travel through space. • Asteroids have been linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs on Earth, 65 million years ago.

  5. The Planets • A planet is a large space object that moves in orbit around the sun. • Some planets can hold life. • Others are very dangerous places. • Planets can have moons. • Cool Fact: Humans and planets are made up of the same substances.

  6. The Sun • The sun is the most important element within our solar system. • The Sun is a star. • It provides light and heat energy that helps support life on Earth.( Humans, plants, animals and the atmosphere) • Because of the sun there are four seasons on Earth. • The sun is 333,340 times bigger than the Earth.

  7. Mercury • Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. • A year on Mercury is about 87 Earth days. • It is the faster planet in our solar system. • It is a very small and rocky planet. • It is an extremely hot planet.

  8. Venus • Venus is a cool place because it could be Earths twin. • But Venus has no oceans and is covered in a thick, rapidly spinning cloud that traps heat. • This causes intense heat and volcanic activity. • Thus, Venus is the HOTTEST planet in our solar system. • It takes 224 Earth days to make one year on Venus.

  9. Earth • Earth is our home planet. • It is the only planet that can support life.( Humans, plants, animals, etc.) • It is also the only planet that has a liquid water surface. • It takes 365 days to make one year on Earth. • Earth has one moon.

  10. The Moon • The moon belongs to the Earths Orbit. • It became part of the Earth when a large body of mass (asteroid) hit the Earth millions of years ago. • The moon broke apart from the asteroid and became part of the Earth. • The moon can been seen by everyone on Earth. • One year on the Moon is 27 Earth days.

  11. Mars • Mars is the closest planet to the Earth. • Mars has a change of seasons. It resembles a cold dessert. • Mars does not have any signs of life on it’s planet today. • Mars has evidence that life may have existed in the past or that life may be able to exist in the future. • Mars has two moons. • It takes 686 Earth days to make one year on Mars.

  12. Jupiter • Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. • Jupiter has 63 moons and several rings. • It takes 11 Earth years to make one Year on Jupiter. • Jupiter is a very dangerous planet. • On Jupiter it rains acid and is very stormy. • Jupiter has a hurricane called the “RED SPOT” that has existed for hundreds of years. • Cool Fact: Almost three Earths could fit in Jupiter's “Red Spot”. • More than 1,000 Earths can fit inside of Jupiter.

  13. Saturn • Saturn has 31 moons. • One year one Saturn is 29 years on Earth. • Saturn has several beautiful rings. • Rings are made up of bits of rock and ice. On Saturn ring bits can be as big as a house . • The wind on Saturn moves at about 500 meters per sec, while on Earth the fastest Hurricane winds only move about 110 meters per sec. • Cool Fact: Saturn is the only planet in our solar system that could float in water.

  14. Uranus • Uranus is considered to be the brightest planet in our solar system. • It is know for it’s blue-green color. • It has 11 rings and 27 moons. • 84 Earth years equals one year on Uranus. • Uranus is a gas planet. • Cool Fact: Before scientist discover Uranus was a planet, they believed that Uranus was a comet.

  15. Neptune • Neptune has 13 moons. • It takes 164 Earth years to make one year on Neptune. • Neptune is a very cold planet. • Cool Fact: It is actually the farthest planet in our solar system for a 20 year period out of every 248 years.

  16. Pluto • Pluto is the smallest, coldest and most distant planet from the sun. • Pluto has one moon. • 247 Earth years make one year on Pluto. • Pluto is the planet that scientist know the least about because of its size and it’s distance from Earth. • Cool Fact: Pluto is 2/3 the size of Earths moon.

  17. How far way are they?

  18. The Distance between the planets • The planets are found in this order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto • A cool tip for remembering the order of the planets: • My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets • or • My Very Early Morning Jam Sandwich Usually Nauseates People • Now try and create your own silly sentence.

  19. The Universe is in Orbit • All the planets have an orbit around the sun. • Each full orbit around the sun creates a year on that planet. • Moons also have an orbit. • But, they orbit around their planet. For example, the moon orbits the Earth.

  20. NASA • NASA, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, goal is to further the knowledge and understanding we have our universe. • It strives on improving life on our home planet. • It is a very important institution. It provides leading research on weather and aircrafts, and even helps develops methods to help cure the ill. • Cool Facts: NASA names all the hurricanes. It invited the cool bed. (on t.v.) and it invited a pen that can write upside down. • For more information on NASA Click here: NASA • For more information on our Solar System or really cool “outer space” activities click here: Our Solar System

  21. NASA • NASA is the group that organized the first trip to the moon. • The United States has been the only country to land on the moon. • The moon has been the only place that mankind has landed. • Let’s watch and see what happened…

  22. Remember the sky is the limit ! • Now you are all experts on the worlds beyond your own. • Space is fun, full of lots of magic and adventure. • Remember Earth is one of a kind, so try and it a cool place. • Try to look up towards the sky, you never know what you might find.
