  2. History Shortly after Captain Arthur Phillip brought his fleet of 11 square-rigged sailing ships to anchor in the small bay that was to become known as Sydney Cove, he sent ashore working parties of convicts to clear an area for the tents and shelters that would house the settlers. Much of the settlement was established on the western shore of Sydney Cove and this district eventually became known as The Rocks.

  3. Circular Quay is the hub of Sydney Harbour, situated at a small inlet called Sydney Cove, the founding sitefor Sydney and Australia On the southern side of Circular Quay is a walkway that leads to the Sydney Opera House and Royal Botanical Gardens; while on the northern side, a short walk along lovely landscaped walkways takes you to the Harbour Bridge and The Rocks, one of the oldest, most attractive and most interesting parts of Sydney.

  4. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Sydney's most famous landmarks. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, which is known locally as the "Coat Hanger", took eight years to build, including the railroad line. Construction on the bridge began in December, 1926. The foundations, which are 12 metres (39 feet) deep, are set in sandstone. Anchoring tunnels are 36 metres (118 feet) long and dug into rock at each end. The Harbour Bridge was officially opened on 19 March 1932. The initial toll for a car was 6 pence (5 cents) and a horse and rider was 3 pence (2 cents). Today the toll costs $3.00.

  5. The Sydney Opera House, situated on Sydney Harbour at Bennelong Point, is considered by many to be one of the wonders of the modern world. Designed by Jørn Utzon and constructed under some controversy, it was opened in October 1973.

  6. The Royal Botanic Gardens, which are just a short walk around the water's edge from the Sydney Opera House, is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful settings you will see anywhere, with the gardens filling an area of land between the harbour and the eastern part of the central business district. The gardens sit on the side of an undulating piece of land and the harbour views from up on the hill are superb.
