  2. Operational concept SLU develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. This is achieved by research, education and environmental monitoring and assessment, in collaboration with the surrounding community. Vision: SLU is a world-class university in the fields of life and environmental sciences.

SLU – Strengths and Profile Areas Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (For example, Umeå’s Plant Science Centre, timber fibers, plant breeding and plant biotechnology, domestic animal genetic resources, molecular domestic animal genetics) Animal and Human Health (Infection biology, reproduction biology, animal welfare science –The Swedish Centre for Animal Welfare, food and health, green technology, domesticated microbes, probiotics, etc.) Climate and Ecosystem Change (Aquatic environments, forest ecosystem structure and function, greenhouse gasses, etc.) Sustainable Production and Natural Resources System for game and fishery administration, sustainable usage of forest and earth, domesticating of microorganisms, interaction of plant and fungus, plants in nitrogen cycle, production of bio-fuels, cycle of plant nutrition, livestock keeping, natural resources economy) Quality in the Food Chain (From raw materials to the finished product, quality and food safety, etc.) Community Planning (Landscape planning, development of urban and rural environments, animal, nature and garden therapy)

National and International Ranking • SLU ”excellent” in the European University Ranking: CHE Excellence Ranking • SLU amongst the 200 – 300 best educational institutions in the world, according to the Shanghai Ranking. • SLU amongst the top 200 universities in the world according to the Times Higher Educations (THE) ranking of world-class universities. • SLU has 3rd place in the national university ranking (Urank), takes into consideration the quality of education provided. .

  7. SLU nationwide SLU has a nationwide presence, its largest campuses being at Alnarp, Skara, Umeå and Uppsala. Sweden measures 1570 km from the South to the North but if you drive the shortest road is 2083 km and on a day with good driving conditions it takes around 24 hours to get from one end to the other. If you go the same distance south you end up in Rome!

Go to the IT-desk and get yourpassword for the computers and WiFi. • Get literature for yourfirstcourses and start reading! • Orientationprogramme starts Aug 28th • Courses start Sept 1st
