  2. Location Northeast of Capitoline Hill

  3. Origins • The prison was built by Ancus Marcius (640-616 BC) • Two theories on name: • Later expanded by Servius Tullius • Was originally used to store water • “Tullus” means “jet of water” • The whole prison was called the Mamertinus prison in Ancient Rome.

  4. Significance/Use • People who were awaiting a trial or an execution would be held in the Mamertine • This would be considered the ‘state prison’ • They would then be executed in the Tullianum • Kings from other kingdoms would be executed in the Tullianum • A king called Jagurtha, King of Numidia was starved to death in the Tullianum
