The majority of the Malay population is Muslim while the Chinese population is either Buddhist, Confucianist, Daoist or Christian. • The Sultan of Brunei is one of the world’s richest men. • It is the only sovereign state completely on the island of Borneo. • Brunei must import about three-quarters of its food needs.

  5. The British sought strategic ports to counter Dutch power in insular Southeast Asia. • By the 1830s, Singapore had become the major trading port in Southeast Asia. • The metal tin played a major role in Singapore’s development. • The Chinese were the labor force upon which Singapore was built, and the city was the conduit for thousands of Chinese laborers going to Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies. • By the late nineteenth century, Singapore had become a major transshipment point as well as a commercial and financial center.

  6. Sea-oriented Singapore was ill-prepared for a land invasion and fell to the Japanese in February 1942. • After the war, the British reoccupied the island. • Limited self-government was introduced in1955. • The creation of Malaysia in 1963 included Singapore, however, unresolved issues led to the creation in 1965 of a separate Republic of Singapore.

  7. RULES ARE RULES! In less than two generations, Singapore has transformed itself from a swampy, overcrowded slum to a modern, gleaming metropolis where rules and regulations control activities and behavior.

  8. RULES ARE RULES! • Littering • Flushing the Toilet • Smoking • Traffic • Public Vehicles

  9. SINGAPORE? MORE LIKE SINGA-RICH! • Singapore is often referred as the traveler’s paradise with magnificent architecture, botanical gardens, a fine zoo (the best in Asia), and a lot of shopping opportunities.

  10. The Land Acquisition Act of 1967 allowed the government to acquire land anywhere, making serious urban planning possible. • Population planning is also part of the grand plan. • Singapore has developed what is called a “Four Tap” policy on acquiring water.

  11. WELCOME TO MODERN SINGAPORE! • Over the years, Singapore aims to be a global nerve center for media and communications. • The island wants to make biomedical sciences more improved, and plans these to make their “fourth pillar” for economic stability. • Foreign firms are found in virtually every sector of the economy, and account for more than two-thirds of manufacturing output and direct export sales.

  12. OUTSIDE SINGAPORE… • Foreigners already make up 20 % of the labor force, and an overseas push is the only place for expansion. • In 2007, 46 percent of Singapore’s investment was in Asian countries; The rest is spread around the world in regions. • Singapore’s goal is for greater interdependence with its neighbors, especially with Malaysia and Indonesia, forming the SiJoRi Growth Triangle.

  13. WHICH IS WHICH? • One way in which Singapore is forging a sense of place is through heritage tourism. • Language, as the context for thought, is vital to forging identity. There are four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil. • Singapore is the only Asian country that recognizes English as their official language. • Due to the diversity of languages, Singapore has adapted a new form of language known as “Singlish”.

  14. The days of 21st century pass, so as the improvement of the country of Singapore. Even it has just a small land area, or it lacks water supply, these hindrances do not stop this little island in becoming a fast growing country in Southeast Asia. Singapore only proves that a corrupt free government, disciplined citizens, and cooperation between them makes the difference.
