  2. Professional Background: • This is my 4th year here at NSJH • I teach Studio Art and Media Arts • Associates Degree in Art at OCC (2003) • BFA (2006) & MS (2007) in • Art Education from Syracuse University • Certified to teach K-12 in NYS

  3. Studio Art I is a 40 week, full year course. • This class fulfills the 1 credit art/music • graduation credit. (High School Course) • Midterm & Final Exams are given • The only requirement is payment • of the $15 course fee to the bookstore. All other • Supplies will be purchased with course fees.

  4. ••••••••••••••••• Objectives••••••••••••••••• 1)Drawing / Sculpture / Printmaking / Design a)  Difference between these artistic disciplines b)     Show techniques learned in each disciplines c)      Know media and tools that exists within each discipline d)      Name and define the Elements of Art & Principles of Design 2)   Art World: History / Careers / Criticism / Aesthetics / Culture a)      Name artists and designers who work(ed) in the disciplines studied b)      Describe careers currently available in the world of art & design c)      Understand and explain how art & design impact their daily lives d)      Hold discussion critiques involving particular works of art e)      Understand and explain the difference between criticism & aesthetics f)       Recognize artworks and motifs that are associated with particular cultures

  5. •••••••••••• Grading •••••••••••••• 40% Studio Art Projects: Studio Art projects will not be graded on how much art ‘talent’ you have or how ‘good’ I think your project is. Each project will have a list of criteria, due date, and workmanship standards. 20% Class Work: Worksheets, handouts, tests & quizzes are given to support lessons introduced in class. Most of these are given in class and some may be finished for homework. 20% Sketchbooks & Writing Responses: Sketchbook assignments will be given (drawing & writing). The sketchbook will be collected during each marking period and graded based on the completion of your assignments. 20% Participation:  This area includes classroom behavior, effort, preparation and engagement in class discussions & activities. A participation grade is given in class every day – either 0 or 100. You will receive a 100 if you make adequate progress for the amount of time given to work and are well behaved while doing your work.

  6. Why is my student taking art? “Such skills include visual-spatial abilities, reflection, self-criticism, and the willingness to experiment and learn from mistakes. All are important to numerous careers, but are widely ignored by today's standardized tests.” “For students living in a rapidly changing world, the arts teach vital modes of seeing, imagining, inventing, and thinking. Artists can fall into 4 main categories… • Art directors formulate design concepts and presentation approaches for visual communications. • Craft artists create or reproduce handmade objects for sale or exhibition. • Fine artists, including painters, sculptors, and illustrators, create original artwork, using a variety of media and techniques. • Multimedia artists and animators create special effects, animation, or other visual images on film, on video, or with computers or other electronic media. • Designers can fall into 4 main categories… • Commercial/Industrial designers combine the fields of art, business, and engineering to design the products people use every day. • Graphic designers plan, analyze, and create visual solutions to communications problems. • Fashion • Interior

Art & Design Career Stats… • Employment of artists and related workers is projected to grow12% through 2018, due to increasing reliance on digital & • Multimedia artwork – could grow 26% through 2018. • Commercial and industrial designers will face an average employment growth of 9% due to increasing demand of upgraded products. They earn an average of $61,890 • Art directors earn a median annual salary of $80,630. The highest ten percent earn more than $163,430. • Graphic Designers earn a median salary of $43,500. The highest ten percent earn more than $76,910. Taken from Bureau of Labor Occupational Handbook

  9. Artists held about 221,900 jobs in 2008. About 60 percent were self-employed. Employment was distributed as follows: • Art directors - 84,000 • Multimedia Artists & Animators - 79,000 • Fine Artists – Painters & Sculptors - 23,600 • Craft Artists – 13,600 • Artist & related workers – 21,500 • **Graphic Designers alone – had 286,100 jobs in 2008 Places of employment: Advertising Firms; newspaper, periodical, book, and software publishers; motion picture and video industries; graphic design & industrial design services; and computer systems design and related services. Some self-employed artists offered their services (free-lance/consulting) to advertising agencies, design firms, publishing houses, and other businesses.
