  1. UC3 Summer Webinar Series Data Management Planning Tool: connecting researchers to resources University of California Curation Center Team California Digital Library July 14, 2011

  2. Data Management Plan (DMP) Tool Roadmap • Overview of the project. • Demonstration of the DMP Tool • 5 ways to use the DMP Tool to reach researchers at your campus • Customizing the tool forcampus use • Timeline for deployment • Questions/Discussion

  3. Overview of project Goals • streamline the process to produce a credible and high-quality plan for managing data • connect researchers with resources Leveraging the work of the Digital Management Plan Online from the DCC Tool will have multiple phases Eight institutions coming together

  4. The what and why of a DMP Components of a DMP The value of a DMP National funding agencies have data sharing polices Scientific journals (Nature, Science, and PLoS) have sharing requirements. Distributing research results may increase citations (Piwowar et al., 2007) A shared, common data set may help researchers collaborate and accelerate discoveries (NY Times, 2010). Sharing research products is increasingly important (Nature, 2009; Science, 2011). For the researcher: helps organize data cultivate quality and efficiency help with preserving and sharing data • Content Characteristics: the types of data, samples, physical collections, software… • Standards: the standards to be used for data and metadata format and content • Access: policies for access and sharing , provisions for appropriate protection of privacy, confidentiality, security, intellectual property… • Sharing: policies and provisions for re-use, re-distribution • Archiving: plans for archiving data, samples, and other research products, and for preservation of access to them. Thanks to Jeffrey Loo, Chemical Informatics Librarian, UCB

  5. UC Stakeholders • Campus Libraries • Contract and Grants • Vice Chancellorsfor Research • Campus Data Centers • Faculty and Researchers University of California Research http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/research/

  6. DMP Tool Out-of-the-Box • For all users • Step-by-step ‘wizard’ for generating data management plans • General guidance for each section: help text and resources relevant to all • Save a plan as PDF, MS Word, plain text or generate a link to a PDF version of the finished plan • For UC users • Links to resources supporting data management available to all UC researchers

  7. Demo

  8. 5 ways you can use the DMP Tool to reach researchers at your campus Important: Under Construction! • The examples used here are strictly examples! • Drafts intended to illustrate potential • Any text or resources pertaining to your campus will be determined by you

  9. 1: Link the researcher to relevant resources and services at your campus as she completes her plan

  10. 2: Provide context-specific, campus-specific help text as the researcher completes her plan x x

  11. 3: Provide suggested answer text

  12. 4: Provide local contact information for data management and related support

  13. 5: Provide local news posts about events, training, new resources

  14. Two Components • The DMP Tool is focused strictly on the task of generating a data management plan • The DMP Tool News blog provides a broader, more flexible range of communication • News about funders • News about forthcoming features in the tool itself • Promote workshops, events • Forthcoming DMP Tool features • Update items at any time

  15. Designed to Meet a Range of Needs • A hook to resources • The publicly accessible page listing all known funders • Link to funder requirements • Link to sample plans • Link to template form • A publicly accessible page about your campus’ DMP support • Contact information (if appropriate) • Any resources you want to highlight • Info about added benefit of using DMP Tool

  16. More about Resource Links Links to services, guides, organizationsat your campus relevant to: • A specific DMP question • Will only show on screen for that question • A grant • Will show for every question in that grant • A funder • Will show for every question in every grant from that funder • Your entire institution • Will show on every question screen

  17. Example: Resource to Show on Every Page for an Institution

  18. Example: Resource to show on every screen for a funder

  19. How to Customize the DMP Tool for Your CampusWe will send forms to: • UC Berkeley • Mary Ann Mahoney • Jeffrey Loo • UC Davis • Phoebe Ayers • Raquel Abad • Ruth Gustafson • Deanna Johnson • UC Irvine • Mitchell Brown • UC Los Angeles • Stephen Davison • Claudia Horning • UC Merced • Emily Linn, Librarian • UC Riverside • Diane Bisom • Barbara Schader • UC San Diego • Ardys Kozbial • UC San Francisco • Kathleen Cameron • UC Santa Barbara • Lucia Snowhill • UC Santa Cruz • Elizabeth Cowell • Provide campus email contact: individual or distribution list to respond to questions from researchers • Tell us who will be writing news posts for your campus. • You will receive a WordPress login • You can add or update news at any time • Provide MS Word template for resource links, help text, suggested answer • (DMP “Editor” access coming with version 2)

  20. DMP Tool Timeline • Usability testing at various institutions in late July • Beta release at 2011 Annual Meeting of Ecological Society of America (8/7 – 8/12) • Full release of phase 1 in September • Phase 1 assessment and Phase 2 planning
