  2. Negotiating Peace South Demands: North and Vietcong withdraw Current leadership maintain control of the government President Johnson begins peace talks in 1968 North Demands: • U.S. withdraws all troops • A Coalition government be formed (that included the Vietcong)

  3. Nixon is Elected President • “We have to get rid of the nightmares we inherited. One of those nightmares is a war without end.” • Introduced Vietnamization – gradual troop withdrawal and gave more control to the South Vietnamese • Number of soldiers declines over three years from 500,000 to 25,000

  4. Changes at Home My Lai Massacre • U.S. military murdered an entire village • 25 officers charged, but only the Lt. was convicted

  5. Invasion of Cambodia • Intention is to clear out Vietcong supply centers • Various colleges erupted into protest

  6. Kent State • Student protest led to the burning of an ROTC building • National Guard is called in and they opened fire on a group of protesting students • 9 injured; 4 killed

  7. Pentagon Papers • Revealed that Pres. Johnson had intended to go to war • Showed that no clear plan to end the war ever existed

  8. War Drags On 1972 – N. Vietnam launches another large invasion of S. Vietnam America ends their insistence that all N. Vietnam troops withdraw from the south • S. Vietnam calls off peace talks • America launches bombings on N. Vietnam

  9. Peace Agreement 1973 – U.S. signs an agreement • Northern troops can remain in the south with the possibility of an American response if peace is broken • By March the last combat troops returned home

  10. Fall of Saigon • 1975 North Vietnam invades the south • The south appeals to the U.S. for help • Sent over economic aid, no troops
