Towzer They All Had This In Common Psalm 42.1 “Like the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after Thee” Scripture -- All had learnt One day in your courts was better than a 1000 elsewhere --- They were content to know God even if they did not feel HIM. 4. ” that they may KNOW Thee” (John 17:3) Union Life with the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost Paul the Apostle Teresa of Avila John of the Cross and Madame Guyon Sadhu Sundar Singh A.W. Towzer They All Had This In Common Psalm 46:10a -- they had all learnt STILLNESS … and that stillness was not inactivity but the most profound engagement. Jesus said I do nothing of myself, and spent HIS time with God HIS Father before He did anything. Psalm 65:4, Psalm 84:10 -- They had learnt from king David that a single day in your courts was better than a 1000 elsewhere (Psalm 84:10, Psalm 65:4)

  5. ” that they may KNOW Thee” (John 17:3, Phillipians 3:10) Union Life with the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost Paul the Apostle Teresa of Avila John of the Cross and Madame Guyon Sadhu Sundar Singh A.W. Towzer They All Had This In Common (continued) Psalm 42.1 “Like the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after Thee” -- Generally were happy (were willing) to suffer rejection and suffering (2 Tim 3.12). My thorns had become my roses (Madame Guyon) -- They all despised the honor or men and were willing to be fools for Christ (John 5.41, John 5.44)

  6. ” that they may KNOW Thee” (John 17:3) Union Life with the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost “the hermitage of the heart” They All Had This In Common (Continued) -- They all experienced spiritual aridity (a sense of abandonment) while in the course of “Spiritual Formation” (2 Corinth. 1:8,9) -- They all had “Job experiences” of sensing GOD’s absence – so as to be weaned from the pleasures of spiritual gluttony, and to learn to live by FAITH, HOPE, and CHARITY (love). (Job, Song of Solomon, 2 Cor 1. 1-9, Hebrews 11.13,14)) etc. --- They were content to know God even if they did not feel HIM. Learnt that revelation knowledge of God and suffering went hand in hand. – (Paul’s thorn in the flesh, in context with abundance of revelation. 2 Corinthians 12:7)

  7. ” that they may KNOW Thee” (John 17:3) • Union Life with the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost • “the hermitage of the heart” • They Had all Learnt • -- That the end of “Christian Mysticism” (simply put, constant communion, practicing HIS Presence -- bro. Lawrence) per John of the Cross is FAITH in God alone (Gal. 3:20, Phil 3:10, ), HOPE in God alone (Heb 11.6) AND CHARITY/LOVE towards God alone and one another –JOB 13.15, Romans 9.2, Number 11.29, Exodus 32.32. IT IS NOT Spiritual Gluttony the delectable joys of the LORD in an of itself (Revelations 2.17, John 6.26) – although these may abound the end of all this is a heart towards God that was shaped by God in Job which could say in the depth of its suffering, “though HE slay me yet will I TRUST Him.” The proof of true friendship is FAITH – i.e. a confidence that the one you love HE (God) will come through although everything may fall apart around you (1 Cor 13:13). It is not the pursuit of Blessings for the sake of blessings alone, (Revelations 2.17, John 6.26 ) but rather the pursuit of the Blesser--for HE who counted it not joy to cling to HIS equality with God is worthy of selfless love. Even as the hymn writer said: “Forbid it Lord that I should gain an interest (worldly honor or gain) in my Saviour’s blood.”

  8. ” that they may KNOW Thee” (John 17:3) • Union Life with the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost • “the hermitage of the heart” • They All Confirmed Their Revelation Through A Second Witness • They all had a second witness in terms of a human witness to confirm their revelation… that at the mouth of two or three witness everything would be established (2 Cor 13.2). Paul “checked the revelation HE got from God with Peter, James and John (Gal 1: 18, Gal 2:2), Madame Guyon in the midst of all her opposition found the right hand of fellowship with Fenelon, Teresa of Avilla in the midst of persecution, found the right hand of fellowship with John of the Cross, Francis of Assisi with Claire. And for us today, Lord will find somebody for us to to confirm “these things” even if it be one saint in His body. And most importantly we have the Word of God by which we confirm all things. ( 1 John 5.7)….

  9. ” that they may KNOW Thee” (John 17:3) • Union Life with the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost • “the hermitage of the heart” • They All Had This In Common • They all had this in common: • Suffered the loss of all things for the Excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus their Lord (Phil 3:8) • Engaged in conversations that were from heaven (Phil 3:20) • They all displayed a righteousness that was not of self or the law, but one that was a by product “of faith in Christ—the righteousness that which is of God by faith—and nothing else (Phil. 310) • They all had a desire to depart, and be with our LORD (Phillipans 1:21, 23) • They all were abased from spiritual gluttony, that they may abound in truth (Phillipians 4:12, ) • They all were caught between a rock and a hard place on where they would rather be ( Phil. 1:21,23)

  10. ” that they may KNOW Thee” (John 17:3) “…I conferred not with flesh and blood (Galatians 1.16, )” “…neither received it from man, neither was I taught (Galatians 1:12)” “…, but by the Revelation of Jesus Christ” Paul the Apostle Paul’s knowledge of God was of Revelation, God spoke directly if you will to HIS heart in deserts of Arabia as he pursued you for at least three years in the hermitage he had made for his heart in the deserts of Arabia…. (Jeremiah 29:13). “and ye shall seek Me and find Me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” Augustine said: “too little does he love Thee, who loves anything with Thee, which he does not love FOR Thee”
