ExploringCOLLECTIVE IMPACT A Model for Changing the Culture
agenda • Outline Collective Impact • Reflect on Collective Impact and the CCSU Project • Collective Impact and the Situational Assessment at VIU
What is collective impact? • Collective impact is: “the commitment of a group of important actors from different sectors to a common agenda for solving a specific social problem.” -Kania & Kramer, 2011 • Unlike most collaborations, collective impact involves: • centralized infrastructure • dedicated staff • a structured process that leads to: • common agenda, shared measurement, continuous communication, and mutually reinforcing activities among all participants.
WhYFOCUS ON collective impact? • Social problems are different than other problems • Social problems are complex • Social problems benefit from multiple mutually reinforcing strategies • Social problems are better solved through consensus (vs. competition) • Social problems often require consistent effort and dedicated resources • If Collective Impact is so effective, why don’t we use it more? “Collective impact is not counter-intuitive, but it is counter-cultural” -Kania, 2013 Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV03F0Ajlks
Additional lessons • The common agenda is enhanced by community aspiration • Learning as a key agenda item enhances shared measurement • Along with mutually reinforcing activities, policy influences should be identified
Collective impact and ccsu • Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNM85aLczkE • What lessons could we learn from CI literature? • What are the strengths/weaknesses of a CI approach? • How can we support our campuses to take a collective approach? • Thinking about your campus, what aspects of a CI approach are you making progress on? What’s missing? Where would your efforts best be spent?
