What is it? • TCP/IP – Internet networking protocols, implemented on low speed wireless systems • In Amateur Radio, usually run on top of AX.25, but AX.25 is not required • Original implementation by KA9Q called NET • Monolithic software running on DOS – Proof of concept Amateur Radio TCP/IP for MicroHams

  3. What Is It? (cont.) • KA9Q evolved it to NOS, intended strictly as an “Amateur Radio” packet devices (like TNC) to SLIP/PPP or Ethernet router • NOS has morphed beyond all recognition – now running on DOS and Linux • Linux is largely the system of choice in Amateur TCP/IP Amateur Radio TCP/IP for MicroHams

  4. What Is It? (cont.) • 44 Class A address space belongs to Amateur Radio • 44.24.x.x is Western Washington • Static IP’s in 44.x.x.x assigned to individual amateurs for experimentation Amateur Radio TCP/IP for MicroHams

What can you do with it (practical uses for it)? • Totally and completely interoperable with the Internet • Totally and completely interoperable with all other TCP/IP devices and systems (run your Sun workstation on a packet radio network) • Chat, etc. utilities • Anything!!! What can you do with it (practical uses for it)? • Email has become the critical app during emergencies • Amateur Radio TCP/IP router can send email from office PC / LAN into Internet • Great training for “bowels of the Internet” – you really understand routing Amateur Radio TCP/IP for MicroHams

  7. What can you do with it (impractical uses for it)? • NFS mounts (takes hours at 9600 baud, but it works) • Exploration of wireless network architectures • Mobile IP going to be explored in depth Amateur Radio TCP/IP for MicroHams

What do you need (hardware/software) to use it? • TNC running “KISS” mode • Serial port modems • Parallel port modems • Radio appropriate for speed (9600 is best, with dedicated radios) • For Windows, SV2AGW packet driver – makes Amateur devices look like “real” network devices in Windows Amateur Radio TCP/IP for MicroHams

What’s being done in the local area with it? • 56 Kbps link from Camano Island to Vancouver 56 Kbps repeater • 3 UHF 9600, 1 222 MHz 1200 repeater (soon to be 9600), 1 2m 9600 bps repeater operational • Portable 222 MHz 9600 repeater • 2 UHF 9600 repeaters under construction for West Tiger and Space Needle • Wetnet tunnel / gateway at WinStar / Northwest Nexus in Bellevue Amateur Radio TCP/IP for MicroHams
