  2. Coordinated School Health Programs A coordinated school health program (CSHP) is an effective system designed to promote healthy schools and healthy students. This coordinated approach involves schools, families, and communities working together to improve students’ physical, mental, emotional, and social health and their capacity to learn.

  3. 8 Component Areas • School Climate • School Counseling, Physical & Behavioral Health Services • Comprehensive School Health Education • Physical Environment • Health Promotion & Wellness • Physical Education & Physical Activity • Youth, Family and Community Involvement • School Nutrition and Food Services

  4. A coordinated approach to school health… • Helps children and youth to grow up healthier and able to learn. • Makes effective and efficient use of existing resources. • Achieves lasting positive changes for schools, staff and students through education, policy and environmental strategies.

  5. Staff model physical activity (PA*) and healthy food choices School policies promote PAN* Students feel safe, supported and respected School policies prohibit bullying/harassment Existing programs and services are assessed for adequacy in meeting student PAN needs Counselors/nurses receive training to enable them to provide basic support and programs for students Counselors/nurses make referrals for a continuum of care beyond the school e.g. Shapedown Instruction that is linked to the Maine Learning Results, is K-grade 12, age- appropriate and addresses factors affecting weight including soda consumption, portion size, PA and screen time These factors are also integrated into other subjects such as physical education and social studies Students are involved in projects or service learning that promotes healthy weight SCHOOL COUNSELING, PHYSICAL & BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES SCHOOL CLIMATE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL HEALTH EDUCATION School lunches provide healthy choices Vending machines only offer healthy snacks and beverages The lunchroom environment and schedule are conducive to relaxed eating. PROMOTING HEALTHY WEIGHT School facilities provide easy access to trails, fitness room and/or other PA opportunities before, during and after school Shower(s) and changing rooms are available for staff and students Point-of-Decision prompts encourage use of stairs and fitness facilities SCHOOL NUTRITION & FOOD SERVICES Families are actively involved as partners through membership on School Health Advisory Council, educational programs, fitness “fun nights” homework assignments, etc. Schools work closely with Physicians and other local health providers to meet the health needs of students Schools provide information to families and the community about importance of PAN and about services for addressing weight issues. Policy and program changes reflect relevant cultural norms PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Physical education classes increase the proportion of time during which students are physically active Time for physical education classes is increased PA is incorporated into elementary school classrooms PA programs are organized before and after school, and/or during recess e.g. Walk Across America Daily recess is scheduled at elementary and middle school levels Non-traditional, non-competitive PA opportunities are offered. Access to PA is assured for those with special needs PA and nutrition programs are provided for staff and students e.g. Move and Improve, Weight Watchers, All Children Exercise Simultaneously (ACES) Referrals to counseling programs are provided regarding weight problems Weight control is included as part of employee assistance programs. YOUTH, PARENT, FAMILY & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE) & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY (PA) HEALTH PROMOTION & WELLNESS

  8. What is the purpose of the Excellence in Coordinated School Health Awards Initiative?

  9. Schools of Excellence • recognizes school systems doing excellent work regarding CSHP; • increases awareness of the benefits of coordinated and quality school health programs among policymakers and the public, including school leaders, legislators, the media, students, and families;

  10. Schools of Excellence • promotes strategies that make a difference and that can be done with relatively little funding; and • encourages other school systems to coordinate and strengthen best practices for school health programs and policies.

  11. School Nutrition and Food Services: Food and snacks available at school and at school events that are balanced and nutritious.
