What happens when people or groups negotiate? • Each wants something different to happen • May view the situation differently • Try to understand both perspectives • Ask for what they want • Have limits to what they will accept • Give in a little to resolve the conflict • Decide on a solution acceptable to all • Act on the decision

  5. Obstacles to success • Do not listen • Do not try to understand both perspectives • Unwilling to give in a little • Uncertain what they want • Unwilling or unable to agree on solution • Get angry • Refuse to talk • Threaten • Use violence • Ignore the conflict

  7. Negotiation steps • Agree on the problem • Agree on the outcome • Brainstorm options to get to the outcome • Select an option • List what needs to be done to make it happen • Act on the plan • Evaluate the outcome together

Rules for negotiation • Make sure everyone is calm. • Be sure each person is willing to negotiate. • Listen carefully & show empathy • Express emotions constructively. • Avoid blaming, name-calling, and insults. • Be sure each idea: • Follows personal and family values • Is safe & healthy • Is legal and follows family, school, & community rules • Shows respect for everyone involved • Will lead to a win-win solution

  9. Negotiation Tips • Take time to think about a conflict and how you want to respond. • Select a time free of distractions • Select a safe place • Select a place free of distractions

  10. Activity: We Can Work it Out • Use steps to negotiation to reach a solution to the conflict. • Work individually. • Label the steps.
