  1. International Space Station

  2. Our learning intentions today are: • To be able to explain what the International Space station is and what goes on inside • To be able to explain at least four important facts about the ISS. • Assessment • During the session • Make a scientific poster about the ISS

  3. The International Space Station (ISS) is really like a giant satellite that humans can live in for short times. The ISS was built in different places on earth. Different parts (modules) were then sent to space over several years and joined together in space. The first part was taken to space in a NASA shuttle in 1998. Humans started living there two years later (2000). Sections have been added over the years and the station is now considered complete.

  4. Countries around the world have worked together to build the ISS. The countries involved are European countries (including Spain), the United States, Japan, Canada and Russia.

  5. Let’s watch this short video clip about the ISS:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/science-environment-34705700/iss-15-years-orbiting-the-earth

  6. Life inside the ISS In what ways could life be different when living in space? Have a two minute whisper chat with your partner! The ISS has 2 bathrooms, a gym and more room than a 6 bedroom house. The ISS travels at 17,150 miles per hour! Eating in space – let’s watch this clip about how you would eat in space: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZx0RIV0wss

  7. Life inside the ISS https://www.spaceanswers.com/space-exploration/how-are-tess-and-the-jwst-different/

  8. Science in Space One of the main reasons for building the ISS was to allow for science experiments to be done in space. Here are a few of the science experiments carried out: • Plants were grown on the ISS. • Tests were done to find out about the effects of living in space can have on the human body. What effect do you think living in space would have on your body? • Looking at how fire behaves in space. • Melting metals and working with chemicals is very different in space.

  9. The ISS • The station has maintained a continuous human presence in space since Nov. 2, 2000, and is the only laboratory that allows scientists to manipulate every variable — including gravity. In the more than 18 years of crewed operation, thousands of researchers on the ground in more than 100 countries have conducted more than 2,500 experiments in microgravity, and that number continues to grow.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Space_Station Astronautsanswerstudentquestions https://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/pdf/569954main_astronaut%20_FAQ.pdf

  10. Now, observe the pictures and in groups discuss the facts on the images. I’m hoping to hear lots of interesting facts afterwards!

  11. There are amazing views of earth from international space station. While the ISS circles the earth, the astronauts can see the earth.
