  2. Goals of Assessment • Assess accurately and use assessment to grade/sort students and to benefit them. Assessment of Learning Assessment for Learning Main purpose = promote improvement; diagnose & support student needs; see progress over time Process during learning • Main purpose = sorting students; promotion & graduation; certify competence • Done after learning

Assessment • Assess Why? • For: diagnostic/planning for teacher, student, or others; student self-assessment • Of: report card grade; other accountability decisions • Assess What? • Knowledge, reasoning, skills, product development (based on GLEs); called learning targets • Assess How? • Selected Response (multiple choice, T/F, fill-ins, short answer) • Constructed Response (students use several sentences to respond to a question or task; teacher uses a scoring guide to judge correctness of response) • Performance Assessment/Event (based on observation and judgment) • Personal Communication (find out what students know by interacting with them) • How Important? • % of class time spent on learning target = % of assessment attributed to learning target
