What is a Strategy?

  • A strategy is the management of the tactics and skills of the game. It is a planned system of play, which is implemented during the game to achieve specific outcomes

  • On Service

  • In our team we have 2 good setters and 2 good spikers. Our current strategy is one where we have everyone playing in all positions on the court, without any specialised roles. We decided to play our two setters opposite each other in position 1 and 3 and two spikers at position 2 and 4. We rotate round all positions on service.

When serving

  • No 1

  • When No 1 serves the ball over the net, our team’s first role is to defend. After he serves, No1 covers the back of the court, mainly in the middle, but they must always be alert so that he can move to both sides to cover surprise attacks from the opposition.

  • No 3

  • No 3 is the setter. In defence, my role is to assess where the opponents attack is coming from , and move across to join either player 2 or player 4 to set a 2 man block. In attack I have to provide quality sets for players 2 and 4.

  • No 2

  • When the attack comes from this side it is his role to try and block out the opponents spike. In the 2 man block, he must also decide where the block should be set up. The role is to play the attacking shots, the spike, the push volley.

  • No 4

  • No 4 Player not involved in the block, must come off the net and move back to help defend the back court in case ball gets past the block. In attack he plays spike, tip and push volley.

  • When receiving serve

  • Our current strategy is one where we have everyone playing in all positions on the court, without any specialised roles. Now we decide our roles when the opposition are serving.

  • When receiving service, 4, 1, and 2 must form a tight semi- circle about 2/3 back on the court. They must be ready to cover the full court and make the first pass into position 3. No 2 and 4 must take serves coming to the front of the court and down the lines and No 1 takes the serve going deep to the back of the court.

  • In the setting position , No 3 , my role is to stand about 1m away from the middle of the net, receive the first pass and then play a high ball close to the net to allow player 2 and 4 to play attacking shots.

  • Player 2 and 4 have to move forward after set from back court and play the appropriate attacking shot over the net.

Strengths of this strategy
Strengths of this strategy

  • This strategy is very simple and involves no great tactical thought. As a result it is not confusing and able to focus on individual roles.

  • As it is not confusing able to fully concentrate on individual skills and in turn improve team performance.

  • Concentrate on individual tactics- e.g. as a spiker I can concentrate on setting up 2 man block and cover back if spike is not played.

  • Positioned good setters and spikers opposite it means that every second position we have best players in preferred positions.

  • 2 man block larger blocking area. Creates a psychological barrier .


  • The main weakness is that every other rotation we have best players out of position

  • Although I am a good spiker, I don’t have the movement or ability of a good setter to be able to provide quality setting passes.

  • Smaller player struggle to fulfil there role as part of 2 man block

  • Simple strategy, opposition find it easy to read and therefore work out tactics in advance and play to weakness within.

  • 2 man block wide area but leaves gaps behind block. Leave team vulnerable to tip.
