Geological Influences on Darwin's Evolutionary Theory

Discover how James Hutton and Charles Lyell's theories on geology, along with Jean Baptiste Lamarck's ideas on adaptation, shaped Charles Darwin's conclusions on evolution. Explore how Earth's processes and natural selection influence the development of species over time.

  1. Conclusions that Influenced Darwin

  2. JAMES HUTTON and CHARLES LYELL • All of these geologic processes are all part of the regular cycle of Earth’s events and occur the same way now as they did in the formation of the Earth • i.e. earthquakes, volcanoes, weathering, etc.

  3. HOW HUTTON and LYELL SHAPED DARWIN’S CONCLUSIONS • Lyell - The world is billions of years old, and Darwin concluded that evolution of species takes a long time to occur • Hutton – These geologic processes affect Earth the same way, then natural selection should also affect Earth’s populations the same way.

  4. JEAN BAPTISTE LAMARCK • Most used body structures develop, and unused structures waste away. • Once structures are modified by use or disuse, they become inherited traits by the offspring.

  5. HOW LAMARCK SHAPED DARWIN’S CONCLUSIONS • The idea of adaptations inspired natural selection. Darwin said that adaptations that help populations increase their fitness are passed on to offspring.

  6. What is “fitness”? • The ability to survive and reproduce
