  1. THE EASTEND MURDERER EYES ON YOU Brought to you by … Abigail Rafferty, Leah Stanley and Patricia Stapor

  2. SYNOPSIS … There is murderer on the loose in East London. Valerie is being stalked and being pictured from her apartment. She suspects she is being watched and looks out of her window. Valerie meets with a suspicious individual in a remote location late at night. Valerie continues to be followed while out walking across a bridge at night. We see a mysterious figure behind her. The bridge leads to a dark secluded pathway along a canal in East London. Valerie turns suddenly and shoots the follower dead with a gun. Valerie is arrested for the murder of a police detective and the other murders. She is the East End Murderer!!!

  3. Research • ‘Noir’ translates to ‘black’ in French and was first used by a French film Critic ‘Nino Frank’ in 1946 • A Cinematic term used to describe this genre of dark crime fiction films, made popular in Hollywood during 1940s – 1950s • We used Google images to find links to websites that showcased noir photography and films to get inspiration of the style of noir we wanted to use.

  4. We looked at the cinematography of neo noir films like ‘Momento’ and ‘Sin City’ to pick out key characteristics of noir styles – Femme Fatale, Anti-hero protagonist, crime, murder and especially the use of spot colour to portray emotions • We researched other films and directors including ‘Robert Siodmak’ as he specialised in noir. His film ‘The Killers’ (1946) was especially held in high regard.

  5. USE OF SHADOW AND LIGHT FEMME FATALE LIGHT THROUGH BLINDS ANTI-HERO PROTAGONIST CRIME AND MURDER SILHOUETTES VIOLENCE KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF NOIR

  6. Audience • Our key audience is this class and any adult with an interest in film and cinematography. Could also have specific passion for noir and crime fiction narratives.  • Due to our intended audience being adults we didn’t have age restrictions to our content  - as key themes in noir are dark, crime, violence and murder.  • We wanted to take our audience on a journey where they felt fear for a main protagonist and were worried for her safety.

  7. Similar to stories we still hear about today about women being harassed and abused, its almost natural to for us an audience to make that assumption.  • However with classic noir there is usual a femme fatale – a dangerous woman who is not held back by the stereotype of a helpless innocent woman at the mercy of men.  • As noir expanded from Crime fiction we wanted there to be a twist in the narrative to create drama for the audience

  8. THROUGH THE BLIND Images of blinds and the use of light and shadow is a classic noir characteristic. We wanted the feeling of the character being watch from the outside to come through here. The light in the background is used to show the comfort and safety of being inside a home. The red spot colour on the blinds is use to show the element of danger lurking outside.

  9. The suspicious meetingHere our protagonist meets a stranger late a night. This is used to allow the audience to start questioning the main character’s agenda. We removed the light in the middle of this picture to create a more eerie location. Used red spot light to show the element of danger Darkened the lighting of the stranger to create more mystery and danger Applied Rule of thirds by cropping the photo

  10. Follow me … As the main protagonist walks along the bridge, the foot lights change to red. This is to imply danger ahead as well as behind. The dark figure is blacked out like a shadow. He is wearing a trench coat and fedora hat – traditional clothing of a detective in noir. The yellow spot colour in the windows is to demonstrate the warmth and comfort of being inside as opposed to the anticipated danger of the outside.

  11. Who’s eyes on who? The protagonist has led her follower to a dark and isolated location, under the bridge along the canal to murder him. The gun has been photo shopped into the photo and is a key focal point of the shot. We use red spot colour to show danger and blood. Our main protagonist represents our version of the classic femme fatale - the dangerous, murderous woman. She hasn’t been followed by a dangerous stalker, she has lured the detective to kill him.

  12. Mugshot We used a police Mugshot as our close up to tie the ending of the story together. We photo shopped the background of the police line up in.
