  3. About myself and my approach… North Carolina born and bred Die hard UK fan !!! I come from a long >>>>> long line of educators. I received my undergrad and graduate degrees from UNCC (History and Education) 3rd year teaching (6th and 8th grade) Athletic Director at Jay M. Robinson (coach Track and Football) Fan of any and every type and approach to education (differentiation, differentiation, differentiation!!!) I am committed to my students, I have made sure that your children know that, “Mr. Hoyle will not let you fail”.

  4. Ms. Mrkich-All About Me! Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Just moved to Charlotte 1 week before school began. Go Pittsburgh Steelers! I received my undergrad degree in Secondary Education Social Studies from Penn State University Went back to school and earned my Masters at Saint Vincent College (Where the Pittsburgh Steelers hold summer camp) in Special Education. 1st year teaching in Middle School. Have taught several grades at the elementary level and 10th grade Social Studies back in Pittsburgh. I look forward to working with your child and assist them in making this a very successful year in 6th grade! I welcome all communication with you throughout the year. What's going on… So far … Coming to a classroom near you • Literature Elements • Character • Setting and Mood • Plot : exposition (beginning), rising action, climax, falling action. resolution(ending), Conflict (external and internal) • Theme • Jamestown Literature Enrichment Program • Touching Spirit Bear – starting soon • Unit 1 test is Sept. 25th • Call of The Wild • Holes • Crispin and The Cross of Lead by AVI • Crispin will start with Historical Non-Fiction Section • Both will include use of Grammar, use of Lit. Elements, and vocabulary.

  6. Reading • At Home • Novels at school—everyday!!! Independent reading is a grade! • Class novels- • Represent as many genres as possible • Will be based on reading ability • Can be purchased at Book Fair or bought tonight.

  7. SpringBoard Interactive AP rigorous textbook Follows along with Common Core Standards and built into novel studies. Focuses on written expression and assignments Students can tear out pages, or view book online. (see me for online information)

  8. Writing Writing incorporated into all units Variety of writing assignments Typing is encouraged Handwriting practice is recommended for students who struggle

  9. Homework Working lunch or working activity session if not turned in Check planner/website for daily homework

  10. 6TH Grade versus 5th Grade Increase in use of inference and analytical skills—very challenging for some students who are still concrete thinkers. Assessments: All content and skills need to be applied (not just memorized) Look at the impact of one element on another (how does setting impact plot, how does the genre influence character, etc.)

  11. Academic Assistance Program Program Description: • There are a number of different academic programs within our building that we provide to support our struggling students. This year we will be implementing an Academic Assistance Program that will be offered during lunch. Once a student’s team identifies a child that is in need of more individualized support, he or she will receive an invitation to our program. This invitation will provide the student with an opportunity to receive remediation and small group tutoring in all academic areas. • Mrs. Hulse will notify the parent that their child will be beginning the Academic Assistance Program. • 1st Invitation – 1 week of program assistance • 2nd Invitation- 2 weeks of program assistance • 3rd Invitation – 3 weeks of program assistance • After 3 invitations have been given out a team meeting with the parents will be set up.

  12. Tutoring… My tutoring hours will be Wed. from 7:15 p.m – 7:45 a.m ...  Need documentation from a parent or guardian (note or e-mail) please bring what it is they are needing help with (topic we are discussing, novel, quiz / assessment / homework).

  13. Ms. Mrkich Tutoring Hours I am available Tuesday mornings from 7:15 until 7:45. I can also make special arrangements throughout the week if needed due to scheduling conflicts.
