Ball State University’sSTANDARDS FOR PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION Under the new rules from the Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) teachers are given licenses only when it has been demonstrated that they have met standards established by the IPSB. The following are three basic sets of standards that BSU candidates must meet: The INTASC Standards The IPSB Standards The Indiana Academic Standards • Why use INTASC? • New licensure rules, under NCLB, were set up in 2002 (Rules 2002). • Indiana’s changes in assessment, both prior to graduation and for the first two years of teaching (state-mandated Mentoring Program) • Caused systemic change throughout all of Indiana’s higher education systems INTASC Principle #6 The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, non-verbal and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. School and Community Involvement INTASC Principle #1 The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students. What is INTASC? The Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) is a consortium of state education agencies and national educational organizations dedicated to the reform of the preparation, licensing, and on-going professional development of teachers. There are currently 34 states that belong to the consortium.
