  2. Katczinsky and Kropp discuss the how they feel the war should be fought. Even though they are obviously joking, there is one serious element they both have in their ideas. What is that element? • Why does Tjaden in particular hate Himmelstoss? • “He finds everything-if it is cold, a small stove and wood, hay and straw, a table and chairs- but above all food. It is uncanny; one would think he conjured it out of the air. His masterpiece was four boxes of lobsters.” • Who is the “he” described in the passage? Activity: copy these figures of speech into your English notebook. • Simile: two unlike things are explicitly compared. • Metaphor: a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order  to suggest a resemblance, as in  • “A mighty fortress is our God.” • Personification: giving inanimate objects human characteristics.

How does Remarque specifically illustrate the truth of Paul’s statement that, “To no man does the earth mean so much as to the soldier”? • In what setting does the heavy shelling of chapter 4 take place? • What is ironic about this setting? • List several signs which indicate to the soldiers that there will be heavy fighting soon. Many military recruiting posters at the time did the same. Recruiting posters are a form of propaganda because they were designed to influence public opinion on social and political issues. Create a military recruiting poster aimed at young people. • Select a strong visual image for your poster and a complimentary slogan or message.
