  2. Some Victorian achievements • Transport - railway system expanded, 250 miles (1864) – 4,700m (1891) • Postage- world’s first stamp - ‘Penny Black’ (introduced May 1840) • Wonders of the world - Great Exhibition (1851, attracting 6 million visitors)

  3. Free education - Education Act, 1876 • Scientific developments - Charles Darwin published his ‘Origin of Species’ (1859) • Electoral reform - from 1867 all male householders eligible to vote or be elected • Public health - sewage system, Joseph Bazalgette; hospitals, Florence Nightingale

  4. Cars – Karl Benz 1st combustion engine (1896) • Telephone – Bell patented 1st telephone (1876) • Social care – workhouses (1834); Barnardo’s children homes (1862) • Sports & recreation - first bank holidays & FA (1871); Wimbledon (1877); 1st test match in (1880)

  6.  Your task • What the film, ‘What did the Victorians do for us?’ and answer the questions on the video task sheet. • Make a list of some of the benefits & drawbacks of these new inventions

  7.  Your task • Your teacher will give you a set of cards describing great Victorian inventions or achievements. Rank them as a diamond 9. Decide which had the greatest positive impact on Victorian society. •  Extension. Which had the greatest negative impact? Diamond 9

  8.  Your task Use the template on the Studyhistory website! • It is 1890, the heyday of Victorian Britain. Imagine you have been asked to write a short article in a nineteenth century travel magazine about Victorian Britain. Describe life in the country as accurately as you can, but try to put a positive spin on some of the less attractive aspects of life in the country.

  9.  Homework • Finish your article for homework. Print it out and stick it into your exercise book. • Extension. Take a look at food in your kitchen cupboards. Can you find 3 brands that were around in Victorian times that are still around today? • Produce a poster advertising typical Victorian products.
